Enter a length in yards and the converter shows it in feet, rounded to four decimal places. Every yard is exactly 3 feet.

How many feet are in a yard?

One yard is exactly 3 feet. Both units are defined from the same international standard, a yard of 0.9144 meters and a foot of 0.3048 meters, and the second is precisely a third of the first.

feet = yards × 3In the other direction, yards = feet ÷ 3.

Since a foot has 12 inches, a yard has 36 inches. The three units therefore chain together as 1 yd = 3 ft = 36 in.

When people use yards and when feet

In everyday American and British usage, yards describe medium lengths. Fabric and carpet are sold by the yard, and sports fields are laid out in yards, so a football field runs 100 yards between the goal lines. Feet are the choice for human-scale measures such as height, ceiling clearance and room sizes.

Because trades often swap between the two, a tape measure marked in feet and a sales order written in yards are a common pairing. Converting is just a matter of multiplying or dividing by 3.

How to convert yards to feet

  1. Type the length in yards into the first box; fractions can be entered as decimals (1.5 for one and a half).
  2. The length in feet appears in the second box as you type.
  3. To convert the other way, divide the feet by 3, or open the feet to yards converter.

Example 1 (fabric). A curtain needs 4.75 yards of material. 4.75 × 3 = 14.25 feet.

Example 2 (a field). A 100-yard football field measures 100 × 3 = 300 feet from goal line to goal line.

Example 3 (a fence). A garden fence run of 8 yards is 8 × 3 = 24 feet, so it takes exactly four 6-foot panels.

Reverse conversion and common slips

Dividing by 3 turns feet into yards, and the answer is often a repeating decimal: 20 feet is 6.6667 yards, or 6 yards and 2 feet. Keeping whole yards and leftover feet side by side is usually clearer than a long decimal.

This tool converts length only. Yards also appear in cubic form (mulch and concrete are sold by the cubic yard) and in square form, and those need a factor of 27 and 9 respectively, not 3.
