How many meters are in a mile?
An international mile is exactly 1,609.344 meters. The value is exact, not rounded, because the mile is defined as 1,760 yards and the yard as 0.9144 m: 1,760 × 0.9144 = 1,609.344.
meters = miles × 1,609.344To go back, divide: miles = meters ÷ 1,609.344.
How to convert miles to meters
- Type the number of miles into the first box.
- Read the length in meters from the second box.
- Divide by 1,000 if you would rather have kilometers.
Examples: 5 miles × 1,609.344 = 8,046.72 m. A quarter mile is 402.336 m, just over one lap of a 400 m track, and a single mile is about 4.02 laps. The 4-minute mile is a speed of 1,609.344 m in 240 s, or 6.7056 meters per second.

Common mistakes
- Rounding to 1,600 m. That falls 9.344 m short on every mile, about 0.58% too low, so a 26 mile route would be off by more than 240 m.
- Using the nautical mile of 1,852 m. The two miles share a name but not a length.
- Treating the 1,500 m race as a mile. The metric mile is 109.344 m shorter.
Checking the result
To verify an answer, divide it by 1,609.344 and you should get your original mileage back: 8,046.72 ÷ 1,609.344 = 5. For distances you know in kilometers, remember that 5 km is 3.106856 miles, so a 5K race is about 3.1 miles, or 5,000 m.
A tenth of a mile is 160.9344 m, a convenient size for trail markers and for judging short distances on a map.
About the mile
The statute mile descends from the Roman thousand paces and was fixed at 5,280 feet in England in the sixteenth century. Its exact metric size, 1,609.344 m, was agreed by the English-speaking countries in 1959. The mile survives on road signs in the United States and United Kingdom, and in athletics, where the mile is still a prestigious event.
