Which units are supported?
Both selectors list the same thirteen units, so you can convert within the metric system, within the imperial system, or across the two. Internally every length passes through meters, which keeps the factors simple and the results consistent.
| Unit | Symbol | System | Exact length in meters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nanometer | nm | Metric | 0.000000001 |
| Micrometer | μm | Metric | 0.000001 |
| Millimeter | mm | Metric | 0.001 |
| Centimeter | cm | Metric | 0.01 |
| Decimeter | dm | Metric | 0.1 |
| Meter | m | Metric | 1 |
| Kilometer | km | Metric | 1,000 |
| Inch | in | Imperial | 0.0254 |
| Foot | ft | Imperial | 0.3048 |
| Yard | yd | Imperial | 0.9144 |
| Statute mile | mi | Imperial | 1,609.344 |
| Nautical mile | M | Nautical | 1,852 |
| League (3 statute miles) | lea | Imperial | 4,828.032 |
Metric, imperial and nautical units
The metric system is decimal. Each prefix stands for a power of ten, so moving between millimeters, centimeters, meters and kilometers is a matter of shifting the decimal point by 1, 2 or 3 places. That simplicity is the main reason it became the worldwide standard for science, engineering and trade.
The imperial system, still in daily use in the United States and partly in the United Kingdom, mixes bases: 12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard, 1,760 yards in a mile. Since the 1959 yard and pound agreement each imperial length has an exact metric definition, so conversions between the systems are precise, only less tidy.
The nautical mile belongs to ships and aircraft. It is tied to the Earth's geometry, close to one minute of latitude, and was fixed at 1,852 meters by international agreement in 1929.
How the conversion works
- Type the length in the upper box and select its unit.
- Select the unit you want in the lower row.
- The converted value appears immediately and refreshes whenever you edit a number or a unit.
result = length × (meters per source unit) ÷ (meters per target unit)Using the table above, 1 mile in feet is 1,609.344 ÷ 0.3048 = 5,280.
Results are rounded to nine decimals with trailing zeros dropped, and numbers above 999 get thousands separators. Answers below one millionth are written in exponent form, such as 2.5e-8.
Miles to kilometers
A cycling route is 5 miles. 5 × 1,609.344 ÷ 1,000 = 8.04672 km.
Feet to yards
A cable is 100 feet long. 100 × 0.3048 ÷ 0.9144 = 33.333333333 yards, i.e. 33 yards and 1 foot.
Meters to yards
A boat is anchored 1,500 m offshore. 1,500 ÷ 0.9144 = 1,640.419947507 yards.
Millimeters to inches
A bolt is 250 mm long. 250 ÷ 25.4 = 9.842519685 inches.

A feel for the scales
Thirteen units spanning twelve orders of magnitude are easier to use when you can picture them. The table pairs familiar objects with a typical size.
| Object | Typical size | Same length in another unit |
|---|---|---|
| Width of a DNA double helix | about 2 nm | 0.002 μm |
| Thickness of a human hair | about 70 μm | 0.07 mm, or 0.0028 in |
| Thickness of a bank card | 0.76 mm | 0.0299 in |
| Width of a bank card | 85.6 mm | 3.37 in |
| Height of a short adult | 1.5 m | 4.92 ft |
| Length of a marathon | 42.195 km | 26.2188 mi |
Common mistakes
- Mixing up m and mm, or μm and mm. A factor of 1,000 is easy to lose when you are reading a spec sheet quickly.
- Using the same factor for area and volume. Squares and cubes need the length factor squared or cubed.
- Assuming every mile is the same. The statute mile is 1,609.344 m and the nautical mile is 1,852 m.
- Copying rounded intermediate values. Convert once from the original number rather than chaining several rounded conversions.
Tips for reliable results
Keep units in view when you copy a number: a plain "10" can be meters or miles, and the difference is a factor of more than 1,600. If the answer looks implausible, check that both selectors say what you expect.
For common pairs, the dedicated pages metric to imperial and imperial to metric give a focused guide. Numbers with long strings of zeros can be rewritten with the scientific notation calculator.
The converter treats a league as three statute miles (4.828032 km). Historical leagues varied, so check the source if you are converting a figure from an old text.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert between metric and imperial units?
Convert the starting value to meters using its exact factor, then divide by the meter value of the target unit. For example, 5 miles = 5 × 1,609.344 m = 8,046.72 m = 8.04672 km.
How many centimeters are in an inch?
One inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, or 25.4 millimeters.
How many feet are in a mile?
A mile is exactly 5,280 feet, or 1,760 yards.
What is the difference between a mile and a nautical mile?
A statute mile is 1,609.344 meters, while a nautical mile is 1,852 meters, about 15 percent longer.
Why do some answers appear as 2.5e-8?
Answers below one millionth are written in exponent form: 2.5e-8 means 0.000000025. The converter rounds to nine decimals first, so anything under half a billionth appears as 0.
