Enter a distance in meters and the converter gives the nautical miles, rounded to six decimals. The guide covers the exact definition, a worked example, the link to knots and a table of useful values.

How many meters are in a nautical mile?

An international nautical mile is exactly 1,852 meters. One meter is therefore 1 ÷ 1,852 = 0.000539957 nautical miles. Navigators write the unit as M, NM or nmi.

nautical miles = meters ÷ 1,852

In this tool the nautical mile unit is labelled with a capital M and meters with a lowercase m. Keep the case straight: M is the large unit, m the small one.

How to convert meters to nautical miles

  1. Enter the length in meters in the first box.
  2. Read the nautical miles from the second box.
  3. To check by hand, divide the meters by 1,852 on a calculator.

Examples: 3,704 m ÷ 1,852 = 2 nautical miles. A harbor channel of 10,000 m is 5.399568 nmi, and 1,000 m is 0.539957 nmi. In the other direction, a vessel that sails 10 nautical miles has covered 18,520 m, or 18.52 km.

Where the nautical mile comes from

The nautical mile was designed to match geography: it is close to one minute of latitude, which is a sixtieth of a degree along a meridian. That makes it easy to measure distance on a chart straight from the latitude scale. The international standard of 1,852 m was agreed at a hydrographic conference in Monaco in 1929; the United States adopted it in 1954 and the United Kingdom in 1970.

Speed at sea uses the same unit. One knot is one nautical mile per hour, which equals 1,852 m per hour, or 0.5144 m per second.

Meters and nautical miles in practice

Sea charts mix the two units: depths and heights are printed in meters, while distances are read in nautical miles. A rock that lies 740 m off a headland is 740 ÷ 1,852 = 0.399568 nmi away, so about four tenths of a nautical mile. Sailors also use the cable, a tenth of a nautical mile, which equals 185.2 m.

Nautical miles versus land miles

A nautical mile is about 1.1508 statute miles, or 1.852 km. A ship's log and an aircraft's flight plan use nautical miles, while road distances in the United States and United Kingdom use statute miles. To compare the two, use the land miles to nautical miles converter.
