How many meters are in a foot?
One international foot equals 0.3048 meters, and the figure is exact. Since the yard and pound agreement of 1959, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa have all defined the foot this way, so it does not depend on measurement or rounding.
meters = feet × 0.3048For the other direction, feet = meters ÷ 0.3048, or roughly meters × 3.28084.
A handy picture: one meter is slightly more than 3 feet 3 inches (3 ft 3⅜ in to be precise), so a doorway that is 2 m tall is a little under 6 ft 7 in.
Feet and meters in daily use
The foot belongs to the imperial and US customary systems. It is still the everyday unit for people's height, room dimensions, lumber and aircraft altitude in the United States, and it remains common in the UK for height. The meter is the SI base unit of length and the standard almost everywhere else, in science, engineering, maps and construction drawings.
Converting is routine whenever documents cross that boundary: an apartment listing in square feet, a product spec sheet from a US supplier, a mountain elevation quoted in feet on a hiking guide, or a ceiling height typed into architectural software that expects meters.
How to convert feet to meters
- Enter the length in feet in the top box.
- The length in meters appears in the lower box straight away.
- If your measurement has inches, turn them into feet first by dividing by 12, then add them to the whole feet.
Example 1 (a ceiling). A room has an 8 ft ceiling. 8 × 0.3048 = 2.4384 m.
Example 2 (a person). Someone who is 6 ft 2 in tall is 6 + 2 ÷ 12 = 6.1667 ft. Multiplying, 6.1667 × 0.3048 ≈ 1.8796 m. You can check this directly: 74 inches × 0.0254 = 1.8796 m.
Example 3 (a floor plan). A living room measures 12 ft by 15 ft. That is 3.6576 m by 4.572 m, an area of about 16.72 m².

International foot versus US survey foot
Until the end of 2022, US land surveying also used the survey foot, defined as 1200/3937 m, about 0.3048006 m. It is longer than the international foot by roughly two parts in a million, which is about 0.6 mm over 1,000 ft. U.S. standards bodies retired the survey foot from 1 January 2023, and this converter uses the international foot, which is what every ordinary length measurement means.
Rounding: the answer is shown to four decimal places, a resolution of 0.1 mm, which is plenty for building, travel or shopping work.

Frequently asked questions
How many meters is one foot?
One foot is exactly 0.3048 meters.
How many feet are in a meter?
One meter is 1 ÷ 0.3048 = 3.28084 feet, or about 3 feet 3⅜ inches.
How do I convert feet and inches to meters?
Convert everything to inches (feet × 12 plus inches) and multiply by 0.0254. For example, 5 ft 9 in is 69 in, and 69 × 0.0254 = 1.7526 m.
Is 0.3048 an exact conversion factor?
Yes. The international foot was defined as exactly 0.3048 m in 1959, so there is no rounding in the factor itself.
