What the years calculator does

This calculator works with calendar years, not exact dates. Choose one of four questions: how many years lie between two years, how long ago a given year was, what year it was a number of years ago, or what year it will be after a number of years. Everything is whole-year arithmetic, so there are no months, days or leap days to worry about.

When you need an exact span down to months and days, switch to the age calculator or the month calculator. The years calculator is meant for quick questions: how old a building is, how long a company has been trading, or when a ten-year plan ends.

How many years between two years

Enter a start year and an end year. The end year is pre-filled with the current year, so for "how long has this been going on" you only need the start year.

The answer appears in five wordings, because "how many years" can mean slightly different things depending on where in each year you start and stop counting. Here is how the five lines relate for 1999 to 2026:

Example: a company founded in 2008 and checked in 2026 has been trading for 2026 − 2008 = 18 years. Counting its founding year as the first, the 2026 anniversary party is the 19th occurrence of that annual event. If both years are the same, the tool reports that a person born that year is less than one year old.

How long ago was a year

In this mode the end point is the current year, read from your device's clock. You only supply the earlier year.

years ago = current year − year

Example: if the current year is 2026, then 1985 began 2026 − 1985 = 41 years ago, and ended 40 years ago. A year in the future produces an error message, because there is nothing to count back to.

What year was it X years ago, or will it be in X years

To go back in time, subtract the number of years from the current year. To look ahead, add the number of years to a base year, which is the current year unless you type another one.

year X years ago = current year − X

year in X years = base year + X

Example: 25 years before 2026 is 2001, and adding 15 years to 2026 gives 2041. The table below is a ready reckoner measured from 2026.

How old was someone in a given year

The "someone born in" line tells you the age a person reaches during the end year. It is the age they turn at their birthday: a person born in 1990 turns 36 in 2026. Before that birthday they are still 35, so for an exact current age use the age calculator, and for a countdown to the next birthday try the birthday calculator.

Limits and common mistakes

• Only whole years are used. A fractional entry such as 2.7 is cut to 2, and a blank or zero field gives no answer.
• Leap years make no difference here, since a calendar year is counted as one year whichever length it has. For leap-day questions see the leap year calculator.
• Decide whether both end years count. Inclusive counting (both 1999 and 2026 included) covers 28 calendar years, even though the gap between them is 27.
• In the "add years" mode, a base year typed with one or two digits is read as a two-digit year (5 becomes 2005, 99 becomes 1999), so type four digits for historical years. A result before the year 1000 is padded to four digits, and one before the year 1 carries a minus sign.
• There is no year 0 in the traditional BC/AD numbering, which jumps from 1 BC to AD 1. The calculator uses plain subtraction, so a span across that boundary needs one year taken off by hand.
