How many leagues are in a mile?
With a league defined as 3 miles, one mile is a third of a league, which is 0.333333 leagues to six decimals. The league is an old unit of walking distance, and it is no longer part of any country's official system of units, so the factor depends on which league you mean.
leagues = miles ÷ 3Check: leagues × 3 gives the miles back.
How to convert miles to leagues
- Type the number of miles into the first box.
- Read the number of leagues from the second box; it refreshes after each keystroke.
- If the result looks like 3.333333 or 0.666667, that is simply a repeating third rounded to six decimals.
Examples: a coach road of 45 miles is 45 ÷ 3 = 15 leagues, and 12 miles is 4 leagues. A longer journey of 100 miles is 33.333333 leagues. Any multiple of 3 gives a whole number, which makes it easy to check the tool: 60 miles must be exactly 20 leagues.

Leagues as walking time
A league was traditionally described as the distance a person can walk in about an hour. At a pace of 3 miles per hour that works out exactly: the number of leagues equals the number of hours on foot. A 12 mile road is therefore 4 leagues, or roughly four hours of walking, and a 45 mile coach road is 15 leagues.
When the league is a sea unit
Sailors used a league of three nautical miles. That is 5.556 km, or about 3.4523 statute miles, so a distance in statute miles needs a different divisor.
nautical leagues = statute miles ÷ 3.452338Example: 21 statute miles ÷ 3.452338 = 6.0828 nautical leagues, against 7 land leagues.
Whenever a historical source quotes leagues, find out whether it means land or sea, and which country. Spanish, French and Roman leagues each had their own length, so the answer from this tool is a modern approximation rather than a precise historical measurement.
