How many feet are in a yard?
A yard is 3 feet, which is also 36 inches and exactly 0.9144 meters. Because the relationship is a whole number, converting feet to yards is a single division.
yards = feet ÷ 3To go from yards to feet, multiply by 3.
Dividing by three often leaves a repeating decimal: one foot is 0.3333... yards. The converter rounds that to four decimals and shows 0.3333, but the underlying value stays an exact third.
Where feet and yards are used
Both units belong to the imperial and US customary systems. Feet suit heights, room sizes and building dimensions. Yards show up when a length is longer than a few feet but still not a road distance: golf yardages, fabric and carpet, garden fencing and edging, and the playing field in American football, which runs 100 yards between the goal lines. In the UK, yards still appear on some road signs next to miles.
Be careful with sellers who quote area or volume. Square yards and cubic yards (common for turf, concrete and mulch) do not convert with a factor of 3; see the mistakes section below.
How to convert feet to yards
- Type the length in feet into the first box.
- Read the length in yards in the second box. It updates while you type.
- To get yards and feet separately, take the whole number of yards and multiply the leftover fraction by 3.
Example 1. A garden fence run is 72 ft. 72 ÷ 3 = 24 yd.
Example 2. A pond liner is 100 ft long. 100 ÷ 3 = 33.3333 yd, which is 33 yd 1 ft.
Example 3. An American football field is 300 ft between goal lines, or 100 yd; with both end zones it is 360 ft, or 120 yd.

Common mistakes
- Multiplying instead of dividing. A yard is the larger unit, so the number of yards is always smaller than the number of feet.
- Using 3 for area. Square feet to square yards divides by 9 (3 × 3). For example, 450 sq ft is 50 sq yd.
- Using 3 for volume. Cubic feet to cubic yards divides by 27. For example, 54 cu ft is 2 cu yd.
For small lengths you may prefer the feet to inches converter, and for long ones the feet to miles converter. To go back, use yards to feet.
