How many feet are in a meter?
One meter is about 3.28084 feet. The exact relationship runs the other way: the international foot is defined as precisely 0.3048 m, so a meter is 1 ÷ 0.3048 = 3.2808398950... feet, a decimal that never ends.
feet = meters ÷ 0.3048Shortcut: feet ≈ meters × 3.28084
The converter divides by 0.3048 directly and then rounds the answer to four decimals. That is slightly more exact than multiplying by the rounded factor: 1,000 m gives 3,280.8399 ft here, while 1,000 × 3.28084 would give 3,280.84.
How to convert meters to feet
- Enter the length in meters. Decimals are accepted.
- Read the length in feet from the second box.
- For feet and inches, keep the whole feet and multiply the decimal part by 12.
Example: a doorway is 2.1 m high. 2.1 ÷ 0.3048 = 6.8898 ft. For a person who is 1.75 m tall the answer is 5.7415 ft; the 0.7415 of a foot left over is 0.7415 × 12 = 8.898 inches, so 1.75 m is about 5 ft 8.9 in.

Where the meter and the foot come from
The meter has been fixed since 1983 as the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second. The foot has a more human story, but since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959 it has been tied to the meter at exactly 0.3048 m.
There is also the US survey foot, defined as 1200/3937 m, which is about two parts per million longer. US agencies stopped using it at the end of 2022, so for everyday work and for this converter the international foot is the one that matters.
Common mistakes
- Rounding the factor to 3.3. That makes every answer about 0.6% too large, which adds up on long distances.
- Treating the decimal part of a foot as inches. 5.5 ft is 5 ft 6 in, not 5 ft 5 in.
- Using the converter for area. Square meters are not 3.28 times square feet; the factor is squared (about 10.7639).
For the opposite direction use the feet to meters converter. Related tools: meters to yards, meters to inches and meters to centimeters.
Frequently asked questions
How many feet are in one meter?
One meter equals 3.28084 feet (more precisely 3.2808398950 ft), because a foot is exactly 0.3048 meters.
How do I convert meters to feet by hand?
Divide the number of meters by 0.3048, or multiply by 3.28084. For example, 10 m ÷ 0.3048 = 32.8084 ft.
How do I convert 1.8 meters to feet and inches?
1.8 ÷ 0.3048 = 5.9055 ft. The whole number is 5 feet, and 0.9055 × 12 = 10.87 inches, so 1.8 m is about 5 ft 10.9 in.
Why does the answer have only four decimals?
The converter rounds to four decimal places. In feet that is about 0.03 mm, finer than anyone measures in practice, and it keeps the result easy to read.
