How many inches are in a yard?
There are exactly 36 inches in one yard. The imperial and US customary systems build the yard from smaller parts: 12 inches make a foot and 3 feet make a yard, so 12 × 3 = 36. Since 1959 the inch has also been fixed at 25.4 mm, which pins the yard to exactly 0.9144 m.
1 yd = 3 ft = 36 in 1 in = 1/36 yd ≈ 0.027778 ydBoth relationships are exact by definition.
Yards and inches compared
Yards are a medium-length unit, used for fabric, ribbon, carpet, garden plots and sports fields. Inches are for the fine end: screen diagonals, picture frames, pipe and bolt sizes and tailoring. A tailor may buy cloth by the yard but cut it by the inch, and a framer may quote molding in either.
Switching between the two is straightforward because the factor is a whole number. The only trap is mixing up area and length: a square yard is 1,296 square inches (36 × 36), not 36.
How to convert yards to inches
inches = yards × 36
- Type the length in yards in the first field, using decimals for partial yards.
- Read the length in inches from the second field.
- For mental math, multiply by 4 and by 9, or double the yards and multiply by 18.
Worked examples
Fabric. 2.5 yards of cotton is 2.5 × 36 = 90 in.
A fraction of a yard. A quarter yard is 0.25 × 36 = 9 in, the length of a quarter-yard cut from a bolt of cloth.
An odd length. 7.25 yd × 36 = 261 in, which equals 21 ft 9 in.
Reverse. 120 inches is 120 ÷ 36 = 3.3333 yd, i.e. 3 yards and 12 inches. The inches to yards converter does this in one step.
