Type a distance in meters and the kilometer value is filled in as you go. The guide below covers the rule, a few worked examples, how the answer is rounded and a handy table.

How many meters are in a kilometer?

A kilometer is exactly 1,000 meters. The prefix "kilo" simply means a thousand, so going from meters to kilometers means dividing by 1,000, which is the same as moving the decimal point three places to the left.

kilometers = meters ÷ 1,000

How to convert meters to kilometers

  1. Enter the distance in meters in the first box.
  2. Read the distance in kilometers from the second box.
  3. To check by hand, shift the decimal point three places left and add leading zeros if needed.

Examples: a 5k race is 5,000 m, which is 5 km. A lake shoreline of 12,800 m is 12.8 km. A short walk of 750 m is 0.75 km, and a standard marathon of 42,195 m is 42.195 km.

Practical tips

  • Add distances in meters first and convert once at the end. A route made of 850 m, 1,200 m and 2,350 m totals 4,400 m, which is 4.4 km.
  • Trail maps, running apps and cycling computers often show meters on short legs and kilometers on the total, so the two units usually appear side by side.
  • For a rough idea of how far that is in miles, remember that 1 km is about 0.62 mile.

How the answer is rounded

The result is rounded to four decimal places. That is more than enough for most journeys, but it means that a very short distance can shrink to zero: anything below 0.05 m, for example, appears as 0 km. Whole meters are always safe, because 1 m is 0.001 km.

About the two units

The meter was proposed in revolutionary France as one ten-millionth of the distance from the North Pole to the equator. Today it is defined through the speed of light, and the kilometer is its thousandfold multiple. Most countries use kilometers for road distances, while the United States and the United Kingdom still sign their roads in miles; to compare, see the miles to kilometers converter.

A frequent slip is to carry the same thousand-fold idea over to area. One square kilometer is 1,000,000 square meters, not 1,000, because both sides of the square are scaled.

For the reverse direction use the kilometers to meters converter, and for shorter lengths the meters to centimeters converter.

Frequently asked questions

How many kilometers is 1,000 meters?

1,000 meters is exactly 1 kilometer.

How do I convert meters to kilometers?

Divide by 1,000. For instance, 3,450 m ÷ 1,000 = 3.45 km.

How many meters are in a 10k run?

A 10k run is 10 kilometers, which is 10,000 meters.

Why does a tiny distance show as 0?

The answer is rounded to four decimal places of a kilometer, so lengths shorter than about 0.05 m round down to 0.
