How many yards are in a mile?
A mile contains exactly 1,760 yards. The number is not a rounded figure: the statute mile is defined as 5,280 feet and a yard is 3 feet, so 5,280 ÷ 3 gives 1,760 with nothing left over.
yards = miles × 1,760To go back, divide: miles = yards ÷ 1,760.
In metric terms the same distance is 1,609.344 meters, because the international yard is exactly 0.9144 m and 1,760 × 0.9144 = 1,609.344.
Where each unit is used
Miles and yards belong to the same imperial family, but they cover different scales. Road signs, odometers and race distances in the United States and the United Kingdom use miles. Yards are the unit for shorter stretches: the length of a football field, a golf hole, a piece of cloth or the distance a fairway wood is meant to carry.
Switching between the two is common whenever a long distance has to be broken into short markers, for example when a running club marks a route every 440 yards, which is a quarter of a mile.
Why a mile is 1,760 yards
The odd-looking number comes from old English land measure. Surveyors counted in furlongs, originally the length of a furrow in a plowed field, and a furlong was set at 220 yards. English law in the 1590s fixed the statute mile at eight furlongs, and 8 × 220 = 1,760 yards.
Centuries later, the 1959 international agreement defined the yard as exactly 0.9144 m. That tied the mile to the metric system too, at 1,609.344 m, without changing a single yard on the ground.
How to convert miles to yards
- Enter the number of miles in the upper box. Decimals are fine.
- The yards appear in the lower box as you type.
- To convert the other way, divide by 1,760 or use the yards to miles converter.
Example 1. A neighborhood loop is 2.5 miles long. 2.5 × 1,760 = 4,400 yards.
Example 2. A marathon is 26 miles and 385 yards, which is 26.21875 miles in decimal form. Multiplying, 26.21875 × 1,760 = 46,145 yards. The check is easy: 26 × 1,760 = 45,760, and 45,760 + 385 = 46,145.
Example 3. A driveway turn-off is 0.3 miles from the highway. 0.3 × 1,760 = 528 yards.

Avoiding mix-ups
This page uses the statute mile of 1,760 yards. The nautical mile used at sea and in the air is longer, 1,852 m or about 2,025.37 yards, so a figure in nautical miles needs its own conversion, for instance with the nautical miles to land miles converter.
The converter rounds its answer to four decimal places and drops trailing zeros. Whole-number results such as 1,760 appear without a decimal point.
