Health and medical use

Health calculators rely on general formulas built from averages across groups of people. They cannot account for your medical history, medication, pregnancy, age or any condition you may have.

Do not use a result to diagnose, treat or rule out an illness, to change a dose or medication, or to start or stop a diet or exercise programme. Speak to a doctor or another qualified health professional, and in an emergency contact your local emergency services.

Financial, investment and tax use

Finance calculators show what happens under the figures and assumptions you enter. Real products differ: fees, taxes, changing interest rates, a lender’s own rounding rules and your circumstances can all move the outcome.

Results are not investment, tax, accounting or credit advice, and they are not a forecast of future returns. Tax rules differ between countries and change over time. Before you commit money, ask a qualified adviser, an accountant or the provider concerned.

That kind of work needs a qualified professional, the codes and standards that apply where you are, safety margins and independent verification.

Rounding, assumptions and input errors

Several things can make a result differ from what you expected:

• Rounding. Results are usually rounded for display, and rounding at different steps can change the last digit compared with another tool or your own working.
• Assumptions and limits. Each calculator states its inputs, assumptions and limits on its page. A result only holds for situations that match them.
• Input errors. A typing slip, a wrong unit or a value outside the intended range gives a wrong answer. Re-read what you entered before you read the result.

Check results before you rely on them

For anything important, do not take a single result on trust. At a minimum:

• Re-enter the numbers and check the units and options you selected.
• Do a rough sanity check by hand, or compare with a second independent method.
• Compare with figures from the official source, provider or professional involved.
• Keep your own record of any result you need. The site does not keep a copy of your inputs or results, so we cannot recover them for you.
• Get qualified advice when the stakes are significant.
