How many yards are in a meter?
A meter is a little longer than a yard: one meter equals 1.0936 yards, or about 9.4% more. The relationship comes from the yard, which since 1959 has been defined as exactly 0.9144 m, so one meter is 1 ÷ 0.9144 = 1.09361330 yards.
yards = meters ÷ 0.9144Shortcut: yards ≈ meters × 1.0936
How to convert meters to yards
- Type the distance in meters into the first box.
- Read the distance in yards from the second box. The conversion happens as you type.
- To estimate without a calculator, add roughly 9% to the number of meters.
Example: the 100 m sprint is 100 ÷ 0.9144 = 109.3613 yards. You can check the result by multiplying back: 109.3613 × 0.9144 = 100.0000 m. A 50 m Olympic pool measures 54.6807 yd, and a 25 m short-course pool measures 27.3403 yd.

Meters and yards compared
The yard equals 3 feet or 36 inches. It remains in everyday use in the United States and the United Kingdom for sports fields, golf holes, fabric and short road distances, while the rest of the world works in meters. Because the two lengths are close, a quick comparison is useful: a meter is the yard plus about a hand's breadth (roughly 8.6 cm).
In 1959 the English-speaking countries agreed on a common yard of exactly 0.9144 m. Until then the American and British yards differed from each other by a few parts per million, which was invisible on a football pitch but mattered in surveying.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a meter and a yard are equal. Over 400 m the gap is already about 37 yards (437.4453 yd against 400).
- Multiplying by 0.9144 instead of dividing. The yard is the shorter unit, so the yard figure is the bigger number.
- Mixing up yards and feet. Divide the meter figure by 0.3048 for feet, or use the meters to feet converter.
To work from yards back to meters, use the yards to meters converter. Smaller lengths are covered by meters to inches and meters to centimeters.
Frequently asked questions
How many yards are in 1 meter?
One meter is 1.0936 yards (1.09361330 to eight decimals), because a yard is exactly 0.9144 meters.
How many yards is 100 meters?
100 meters is 109.3613 yards.
How do I convert meters to yards in my head?
