Enter the numerator and denominator and the percentage appears as you type. The guide below covers the formula, mixed numbers and what to expect from repeating values.

Turning a fraction into a percentage

A percentage is a fraction whose denominator is 100. So converting 17/20 to a percentage means finding the equivalent fraction over 100, and the quickest way to do that for any fraction is to divide first and then multiply by 100.

percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100

How to convert a fraction to a percent

  1. Divide the numerator by the denominator to get a decimal.
  2. Multiply the decimal by 100.
  3. Add a % sign to the result.

Example: 3/8. 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375, and 0.375 × 100 = 37.5, so 3/8 is 37.5%.

Shortcut when the denominator divides 100: 17/20 has a denominator that goes into 100 five times. Multiply the top and the bottom by 5 to get 85/100, which is 85%.

Mixed numbers: convert to an improper fraction first. 1 3/4 is (1 × 4 + 3)/4 = 7/4, and 7 ÷ 4 × 100 = 175%. Any fraction larger than 1 gives a percentage above 100.

Simplify first if you like. 45/60 reduces to 3/4, and 3 ÷ 4 × 100 = 75%. The answer is the same either way.

What the converter shows

  • The % sign sits beside the answer box, so the box holds only the number.
  • Up to 6 decimal places. 1/3 gives 33.333333 and 7/9 gives 77.777778. Results that terminate sooner show no trailing zeros: 3/8 is 37.5, not 37.500000.
  • Decimals and negatives are accepted in both boxes: 2.5 over 0.4 gives 625 and −1 over 4 gives −25.
  • A zero denominator shows Infinity, and 0 over 0 shows NaN, because dividing by zero has no value. Empty boxes count as 0.

Everyday examples

Test scores. A student who answers 42 of 50 questions correctly has 42/50, and 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%. With 18 of 24, the figure is 0.75 × 100 = 75%.

Shares and portions. If a team spent 7 of its 9 budget lines this quarter, that is 7/9 = 77.777778% of the lines, which you would normally round to 77.8% when you write it down.

Comparing different denominators. 5/8 and 3/5 are hard to compare as they stand. As percentages they are 62.5% and 60%, so 5/8 is the larger. Putting everything over 100 is the whole point of a percentage.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert 1/4 to a percent?

Divide 1 by 4 to get 0.25, then multiply by 100. The result is 25%.

How do I convert a fraction to a percent without a calculator?

If the denominator divides 100, scale the fraction to have 100 on the bottom: 7/20 becomes 35/100, which is 35%. Otherwise use long division and multiply by 100.

Can a fraction be more than 100%?

Yes. When the numerator is larger than the denominator the fraction is greater than 1, so the percentage is above 100. For example, 5/4 is 125%.

Why do repeating results end at six decimals?

A value such as 1/3 has endless 3s in its percentage. The converter rounds to six decimal places, so you see 33.333333%.
