Enter a percentage and get the equivalent fraction in lowest terms, shown as a mixed number when the value is above 100%. The guide explains how to do the same conversion by hand.

Converting a percentage to a fraction

A percentage is a fraction whose denominator is fixed at 100: 35% means 35/100. Converting to a fraction therefore means writing the percentage over 100 and then reducing it to lowest terms.

fraction = percent ÷ 100, then simplifyReduce by dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor.

Percentages above 100% give improper fractions, which are usually written as mixed numbers: 150% is 3/2, or 1 1/2. Exactly 100% is the whole number 1, and 0% is 0.

How to convert percent to fraction

  1. Write the percentage as a numerator over 100.
  2. If the percentage has decimals, multiply the top and bottom by 10, 100 or 1,000 until the numerator is a whole number.
  3. Find the greatest common divisor of numerator and denominator and divide both by it.
  4. If the numerator is larger than the denominator, split off the whole part to get a mixed number.

Example 1. 45% = 45/100. Both numbers divide by 5, giving 9/20.

Example 2. 37.5% = 37.5/100. Multiply top and bottom by 10 to get 375/1000, then divide both by 125: 3/8.

Example 3. 0.4% = 0.4/100 = 4/1000 = 1/250.

Example 4. 175% = 175/100 = 7/4, which is 1 3/4 as a mixed number.

How the converter handles awkward values

The tool does not simply place your number over 100. It searches for the simplest fraction that matches your value to within one part in a million, which keeps the answer compact for values that have a neat fraction. A percentage such as 12.5% therefore appears as 1/8 and 62.5% as 5/8.

Because it works from the digits you typed rather than from an unwritten repeating decimal, 33.3333% is not shown as 1/3. It is a slightly different number from one third, so the converter returns the fraction 333332/999997, which agrees with it to within the tolerance. If you want one third, type at least five threes after the decimal point (33.33333), or go the other way and enter 1/3 in the fraction to percent converter.

Rounded percentages hide the original fraction. 66.67% looks like two thirds, but it is 6667/10000 in exact terms (the tool shows 6665/9997, a nearby fraction within the one-in-a-million tolerance).

Mistakes to avoid

  • Stopping before simplifying. 20/100 is correct but 1/5 is the answer people expect.
  • Dropping the decimal point. 12.5% is 125/1000 = 1/8, not 125/100.
  • Treating the percent number as the denominator. 25% is 25 out of 100, which is 1/4. It is not 1/25.
  • Reading a mixed number as a product. 1 1/2 means one plus one half, not one times one half.

12.5% = 12.5/100 = 125/1000 = 1/8.

How do I write a percentage over 100% as a fraction?

Use an improper fraction or a mixed number. 140% = 140/100 = 7/5 = 1 2/5.

Why does 33.3333% not come out as 1/3?
