How many inches are in a foot?
A foot is made of 12 inches. The two units belong to the same imperial and US customary family, and the ratio has been 12 to 1 for centuries; today both are tied to the metric system, with 1 in = 2.54 cm and 1 ft = 30.48 cm exactly.
inches = feet × 12To convert back, divide inches by 12.
Because 12 divides evenly by 2, 3, 4 and 6, common fractions of a foot give whole inches: a half foot is 6 in, a third is 4 in, a quarter is 3 in.
How to convert feet to inches
- Enter the length in feet in the first box. Decimals are allowed.
- The second box shows the length in inches.
- Use the result directly, or read it as feet and inches with the method below.
Example 1. A ceiling 8 ft high is 8 × 12 = 96 in high.
Example 2. A 6.5 ft sofa is 78 in long.
Example 3. A plank 2.75 ft long measures 2.75 × 12 = 33 in.
Going back to feet and inches
To express a number of inches as feet plus leftover inches, divide by 12, keep the whole number as feet, and the remainder is the inches. For 100 in: 100 ÷ 12 = 8 remainder 4, so 100 in is 8 ft 4 in, or 8.3333 ft in decimals.
Squares and cubes of the factor apply to area and volume. 1 ft² = 144 in² (12 × 12) and 1 ft³ = 1,728 in³ (12 × 12 × 12), so do not multiply an area by 12.
How feet and inches fit the imperial ladder
Feet and inches are two rungs of one ladder: 12 inches make a foot, 3 feet make a yard, and 5,280 feet make a statute mile. Chaining the steps gives other handy totals, such as 36 inches in a yard and 63,360 inches in a mile (5,280 × 12).
Heights are the usual mixed case. A person who is 5 ft 8 in tall is 5 × 12 + 8 = 68 in; at 6 ft 2 in the total is 74 in. Written as decimals those heights are 5.6667 ft and 6.1667 ft, which is why feet-and-inches are normally kept as two separate numbers.

The result is rounded to four decimals and trailing zeros are dropped, so 5.5 ft appears as 66 and not 66.0000. Multiplying by a whole number never adds decimal places, so rounding only shows up when the input itself has more than four decimals.
