Millimeters to Nanometers Converter
Type a length in millimeters and the converter shows nanometers at once. One millimeter is exactly one million nanometers, and the guide below shows the rule with worked examples.

How many nanometers are in a millimeter?
One millimeter contains exactly 1,000,000 nanometers. A millimeter is 10-3 m and a nanometer is 10-9 m, so the two differ by six powers of ten. Both units come from the metric (SI) prefixes milli and nano, which means the ratio is exact rather than measured.
1 mm = 1,000,000 nm = 106 nm 1 nm = 0.000001 mm
The size gap is large: if a nanometer were as long as a millimeter, a millimeter would stretch to a kilometer.
Millimeters versus nanometers
Millimeters describe things people handle: a pen tip, a pin head or a sheet of cardboard. Nanometers describe the realm of light, molecules and microchips. The visible spectrum runs from roughly 400 nm (violet) to 700 nm (red), a DNA double helix is about 2 nm wide, and a hydrogen atom measures around 0.1 nm across.
Converting between the two is common when a macroscopic dimension has to be compared with a wavelength or a film thickness, for example checking how many wavelengths of light fit across a 1 mm slit, or expressing an optical coating in the same unit as the light it is designed for.
How to convert mm to nm
nanometers = millimeters × 1,000,000
- Enter the length in millimeters in the first field.
- The nanometer value appears in the second field and follows every edit.
- By hand, move the decimal point six places to the right, padding with zeros where needed.
Worked examples
Green light. A wavelength of 0.00055 mm becomes 0.00055 × 1,000,000 = 550 nm, the middle of the visible band.
A thin film. A coating that is 0.0002 mm thick measures 200 nm.
A small gap. A 3.2 mm gap is 3.2 × 1,000,000 = 3,200,000 nm.
Reverse direction. A 400 nm wavelength is 400 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.0004 mm, which the nanometers to millimeters converter handles directly.

Very large results
The converter rounds to four decimal places and prints plain numbers without thousands separators, so 100 mm shows as 100000000 nm. Once a result reaches 1021 or more, it switches to scientific notation, for example 1.2345678901234569e+23, where e+23 means "times ten to the power of 23". Floating-point arithmetic also limits very long inputs to about 15 to 17 significant digits.
If you would rather go in two steps, millimeters to micrometers gives the middle rung: 1 mm is 1,000 μm and 1 μm is 1,000 nm. Everyday sizes are covered by millimeters to centimeters, millimeters to meters and millimeters to inches.
Frequently asked questions
How many nanometers are in a millimeter?
Exactly 1,000,000 (one million) nanometers make up one millimeter.
How do I convert mm to nm?
Multiply the value in millimeters by 1,000,000. For example, 0.002 mm × 1,000,000 = 2,000 nm.
How many mm is 500 nm?
500 nm equals 0.0005 mm, since you divide by 1,000,000 to go from nanometers to millimeters.
Why does a very large answer show an e in it?
Results of 1021 or more are written in scientific notation. The part after e is the power of ten, so 1.5e+22 means 1.5 × 1022.
