Type a length in meters and read it in millimeters. There are exactly 1,000 millimeters in a meter, so the answer is the input with the decimal point moved three places right.

How many millimeters are in a meter?

One meter equals 1,000 millimeters. Milli- is the SI prefix for one thousandth, so a millimeter is 0.001 m. The relation is exact and needs no rounding.

millimeters = meters × 1000To go the other way, divide millimeters by 1000.

The easiest method is to move the decimal point three places to the right and pad with zeros if needed. 0.8 m becomes 800 mm and 12 m becomes 12,000 mm.

Why drawings use millimeters

Architectural, engineering and manufacturing drawings in metric countries are commonly dimensioned in millimeters with no decimal point, because whole millimeters are precise enough for most building work and avoid mistakes with decimal places. A wall shown as 2400 is 2.4 m high; a doorway marked 2040 is 2.04 m.

Sheet thicknesses, pipe diameters, bolt sizes and camera lens focal lengths are likewise quoted in millimeters. When a supplier lists a length in meters and your drawing is in millimeters, this converter removes the guesswork.

How to convert meters to millimeters

  1. Enter the length in meters in the first field.
  2. Read the millimeters in the second field. It refreshes on each keystroke.
  3. Check the size of the answer: it should be a thousand times the original number.

Example 1. A ceiling 2.4 m high is 2.4 × 1000 = 2400 mm.

Example 2. A 0.75 m worktop depth is 750 mm.

Example 3. A 0.0035 m wire diameter is 3.5 mm.

For area, one square meter is 1,000 × 1,000 = 1,000,000 square millimeters. The same squaring rule applies to volume, where a cubic meter is 1,000,000,000 cubic millimeters.

Avoiding errors

  • Counting zeros. Three zeros for millimeters, two for centimeters. Writing 2.4 m as 240 mm instead of 2400 mm is the classic slip; the meters to centimeters converter gives the 240 figure in cm.
  • Mixing meters with millimeters in one formula. Convert everything to a single unit before adding or comparing lengths.
  • Dropping a decimal. 0.005 m is 5 mm, not 50 mm. Write the value down in full before shifting the point.

To check an imperial size, pair this with the meters to inches converter.

Frequently asked questions

How many millimeters are in a meter?

Exactly 1,000 millimeters.

How do I convert meters to millimeters?

Multiply the number of meters by 1,000, or shift the decimal point three places to the right.

How many millimeters is 3.25 meters?

3.25 × 1000 = 3,250 millimeters.

How many square millimeters are in a square meter?

One million. Each side is 1,000 mm, and 1,000 × 1,000 = 1,000,000.
