How many inches are in a yard?
A yard is 36 inches: three feet of twelve inches each. In metric terms the international yard is exactly 0.9144 meters, so a single inch is 1/36 of that.
yards = inches ÷ 36To convert yards to inches instead, multiply by 36.
One inch is only 0.0277... yards, so you will see small decimals for short lengths. The converter prints four places, which is why a single inch appears as 0.0278.
Where yards are still the working unit
Yards survive in a few well-known places: fabric and curtain material sold by the yard, carpet and turf rolls, landscaping and gravel quantities, and the playing fields of American and Canadian football. Measuring tapes for sewing, on the other hand, are almost always marked in inches, so a conversion between the two is a routine step when you cut cloth or order by length.
The same relationship applies when you buy by the yard but measure in inches. A fabric bolt 54 inches wide is 1.5 yards across, and a pattern that calls for 200 inches of trim needs 5.5556 yards, which in practice means buying 5 and 3/4 yards or six to be safe.
How to convert inches to yards
- Enter the length in inches.
- Read the yards in the second box. The answer updates immediately.
- To express the answer as yards plus a remainder, keep the whole number and multiply the decimal part by 36 to get the leftover inches.
Example 1. 120 inches ÷ 36 = 3.3333 yards, which is 3 yards and 12 inches (3 yd 1 ft).
Example 2. 75 inches ÷ 36 = 2.0833 yards; the leftover 0.0833 yd is 3 inches, so 2 yd 3 in.
Example 3. A 1000-inch cable is 1000 ÷ 36 = 27.7778 yards, about 27 yd 2 ft 4 in.

Notes on accuracy
- Round up for purchases. Fabric and rope are sold in set increments, so a result of 5.5556 yards means ordering at least 5.6 yards, not 5.5.
- Keep units straight. Dividing inches by 12 gives feet, by 36 gives yards. Using 12 by mistake makes the answer three times too large.
- Metric equivalents. One yard is 91.44 cm, so a result in yards can be checked against the inches to centimeters converter by multiplying the yards by 91.44.
