How many centimeters are in a decimeter?
One decimeter is 10 centimeters. In SI naming, deci- means a tenth and centi- a hundredth, so a decimeter is 0.1 m and a centimeter is 0.01 m, and the ratio between them is exactly 10.
centimeters = decimeters × 10For the reverse, divide centimeters by 10.
In practice the decimal point simply moves one place to the right: 3.2 dm is 32 cm, and 0.5 dm is 5 cm.
How to convert dm to cm
- Enter the number of decimeters in the first box.
- The second box gives the centimeters instantly.
- Copy the result or keep typing to try another value.
Example 1. A plant stands 4.5 dm tall, which is 4.5 × 10 = 45 cm.
Example 2. A tile 0.8 dm wide is 8 cm wide.
Example 3. A plank measuring 12.25 dm is 122.5 cm long.
Areas and volumes
Squares and cubes of the factor apply to area and volume. 1 dm² = 10 cm × 10 cm = 100 cm², and 1 dm³ = 10 × 10 × 10 = 1,000 cm³. A cubic decimeter is also exactly one liter, which is why 1 L = 1,000 cm³.
Example. An aquarium measuring 2 dm × 3 dm × 5 dm holds 30 dm³, that is 30 liters. In centimeters the tank is 20 × 30 × 50 = 30,000 cm³, and 30,000 ÷ 1,000 = 30 again.
Do not multiply an area by 10 to go from dm² to cm². Multiply by 100 for areas and by 1,000 for volumes.
Where the decimeter sits in the metric ladder
Each metric length unit is ten times the next one down, so the decimeter is easy to place between the meter and the centimeter:
| Unit | Symbol | In meters | In decimeters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meter | m | 1 | 10 |
| Decimeter | dm | 0.1 | 1 |
| Centimeter | cm | 0.01 | 0.1 |
| Millimeter | mm | 0.001 | 0.01 |
Mixed lengths follow the same logic: 3 dm 4 cm is 3 × 10 + 4 = 34 cm.
Decimeters to centimeters table
| Decimeters (dm) | Centimeters (cm) |
|---|---|
| 0.1 | 1 |
| 0.25 | 2.5 |
| 0.5 | 5 |
| 1 | 10 |
| 2 | 20 |
| 3 | 30 |
| 5 | 50 |
| 7.5 | 75 |
| 10 | 100 |
| 15 | 150 |
| 20 | 200 |
| 25 | 250 |
| 50 | 500 |
| 100 | 1,000 |
Notes on the result
The converter rounds to four decimals and removes trailing zeros, so 7.5 dm appears as 75 rather than 75.0000. Since multiplying by 10 only shifts the decimal point, rounding matters only for inputs with more than five decimal places.
To convert in the other direction, use the centimeters to decimeters converter. For a wider view of metric lengths, the centimeters to meters converter and the centimeters to millimeters converter cover the neighbouring steps.
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert decimeters to centimeters?
Multiply by 10. For instance, 6 dm × 10 = 60 cm.
How many centimeters are in 1 dm?
There are 10 centimeters in 1 decimeter.
How many cubic centimeters are in a cubic decimeter?
1 dm³ equals 1,000 cm³, and it is the same volume as 1 liter.
Is a decimeter bigger than a centimeter?
Yes. One decimeter is ten times as long as one centimeter.
