Nanometers to Millimeters Converter
Type a length in nanometers and see it in millimeters straight away, to seven decimal places. One millimeter is a million nanometers, and the guide shows how to apply that by hand.

How many nanometers make a millimeter?
A millimeter is made up of exactly 1,000,000 nanometers. The millimeter is 10-3 m and the nanometer is 10-9 m, a gap of six powers of ten, and both are defined through SI prefixes, so the figure is exact.
1 nm = 0.000001 mm = 10-6 mm 1 mm = 1,000,000 nm
Put differently, a nanometer is a millionth of a millimeter. Even a thin sheet of paper, at around 0.1 mm, is some 100,000 nm thick.
Nanometers and millimeters compared
Millimeters are the everyday small unit: they appear on rulers, calipers, lens barrels and product dimensions. Nanometers are the language of optics, semiconductors and nanotechnology, where wavelengths and film thicknesses are measured in the hundreds. Visible light spans roughly 400 to 700 nm, and the layers deposited on a camera lens or a solar cell are often only tens to hundreds of nanometers thick.
The conversion matters when a physical component has to be matched against a wavelength. A 2.5 mm aperture, a 633 nm helium-neon laser line, or a 100 nm coating all sit comfortably in the same calculation once they use one unit.
How to convert nm to mm
millimeters = nanometers ÷ 1,000,000
- Enter the length in nanometers in the first field.
- The result in millimeters shows in the second field and updates as you edit.
- By hand, shift the decimal point six places to the left, adding zeros in front as required.
Worked examples
A laser line. A 633 nm red laser has a wavelength of 633 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.000633 mm.
An inch in nanometers. One inch is 25.4 mm, so 25,400,000 nm; conversely 25,400 nm is 0.0254 mm, exactly a thousandth of an inch.
A big number. 2,500,000 nm ÷ 1,000,000 = 2.5 mm.
Reverse. To turn 0.0004 mm back into nanometers multiply by 1,000,000, giving 400 nm; use the millimeters to nanometers converter for that.

Reading small results and e-notation
This converter keeps seven decimal places, so its smallest step is 0.0000001 mm, which is 0.1 nm. Results of one millionth of a millimeter (1 nm) or more are written out in full, for example 3 nm gives 0.000003. Anything smaller is displayed in scientific notation: 0.1 nm appears as 1e-7 and 0.5 nm as 5e-7. Read the number after the e as a power of ten, so 5e-7 means 5 × 10-7 mm, or 0.0000005 mm.
For neighboring units see nanometers to micrometers, which avoids the long strings of zeros, and millimeters to micrometers. The wider family is listed in dimension converters.
Frequently asked questions
How many mm is 1 nm?
One nanometer is 0.000001 mm (10-6 mm), a millionth of a millimeter.
How do I convert nanometers to millimeters?
Divide by 1,000,000. For example, 450,000 nm ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.45 mm.
Why does the result show something like 1e-7?
Very small answers are shown in scientific notation. 1e-7 means 1 × 10-7, which is 0.0000001 mm.
How many nanometers are in 5 mm?
5 mm is 5,000,000 nm, because you multiply millimeters by 1,000,000 to get nanometers.
