How many millimeters are in a meter?
A meter holds exactly 1,000 millimeters. The prefix milli means one thousandth, so a millimeter is 0.001 m by definition. The meter is the SI base unit of length, which makes this one of the cleanest conversions in the metric system.
1 m = 1,000 mm 1 mm = 0.001 mBoth numbers are exact.
To picture it, a meter is about the height from the floor to a door handle, and a millimeter is about the thickness of ten sheets of office paper stacked together.
Where each unit is used
Millimeters dominate in construction drawings, joinery, machining and product design, because whole-number millimeters avoid decimals while still being precise enough for building work. A door leaf might be listed as 2,040 mm high and a stud spacing as 600 mm. Meters show up in surveying, room layouts, cable and pipe runs, and anywhere a length is large enough that thousands of millimeters become hard to read.
A single spec sheet often mixes both, such as a panel quoted as 2,440 mm while the order form asks for meters. This tool does the translation without having to count zeros.
How to convert mm to meters
meters = millimeters ÷ 1,000
- Enter the millimeters in the upper field.
- The meters value fills in below as you type.
- To do it on paper, move the decimal point three places to the left (add leading zeros if needed).
Worked examples
A ceiling. A room is 2,450 mm from floor to ceiling. 2,450 ÷ 1,000 = 2.45 m.
A door. The door leaf is 2,040 mm tall, so it measures 2.04 m.
A small part. A bracket is 87 mm long. Moving the decimal three places gives 0.087, so the bracket is 0.087 m.
A long run. A cable duct of 12,500 mm is 12.5 m.

Rounding and nearby converters
The converter shows four decimal places, so its smallest step is 0.0001 m, or a tenth of a millimeter. A length under about 0.05 mm therefore displays as 0 m. For measurements that small, the millimeters to micrometers converter is the better fit.
