How many inches are in a foot?

A foot contains 12 inches, and that relationship is exact. Both units come from the imperial and US customary systems and are tied to the metric system through the definition 1 inch = 25.4 mm, which makes one foot exactly 0.3048 meters.

Dividing by twelve rarely gives a tidy decimal. One inch is 0.083333... feet, so the converter rounds to four decimals and shows 0.0833. The underlying relationship stays exact; only the display is shortened.

Decimal feet versus feet and inches

Everyday speech uses feet and inches (a board that is 5 ft 10 in long), while spreadsheets, CAD software and many calculators want a single number in decimal feet. The converter gives you the second form. To recover the first form, split the answer: keep the whole feet, then multiply the leftover decimal by 12.

For 70 inches the converter shows 5.8333 ft. Whole feet: 5. Remainder: 0.8333 × 12 ≈ 10 inches. So 70 in is 5 ft 10 in. Going the other direction, 5.75 ft is 5 ft and 0.75 × 12 = 9 in, which is 69 inches in total.

A decimal foot is not the same as an inch count after the point. 5.5 ft means five and a half feet, which is 5 ft 6 in, not 5 ft 5 in.

Where people go wrong

• Dividing by 10. Metric habits make 10 feel natural, but a foot has 12 inches. 60 inches is 5 feet, not 6.
• Treating the decimal as inches. 0.5 ft is 6 inches (half of 12), not 5.
• Rounding before you cut or order. For materials, work from the exact inch count and only round the final figure, ideally up when buying.
• Mixing units in one input. Enter a single number of inches. If you have 4 ft 3 in, change it to 51 inches first.
