Enter a number of teaspoons and read the volume in milliliters or liters. The converter uses the US teaspoon (4.93 ml) or the imperial teaspoon (5.92 ml) and rounds milliliters to whole numbers.

Teaspoons versus milliliters in recipes

A teaspoon is an informal unit with three common sizes. The US teaspoon is one third of a US tablespoon, about 4.93 ml. The imperial teaspoon is about 5.92 ml. And many modern measuring spoons, food labels and dosing guides simply define a teaspoon as 5 ml.

The US and metric values are only 1.4% apart, which is why "a teaspoon is 5 ml" works well in a kitchen. The imperial spoon is noticeably bigger, about 20% more than the US one.

How to convert teaspoons to milliliters

  1. Enter the number of teaspoons in the Convert box and choose US Teaspoons or Imp. Teaspoons.
  2. Select MilliLiters or Liters in the To menu.
  3. Read the result. It updates as you type. The ingredient menu has no effect, since both units are volumes.

milliliters = US teaspoons × 4.92892

milliliters = imperial teaspoons × 5.91939Divide milliliters by 1,000 for liters.

The converter rounds milliliters to whole numbers and liters to three decimals. One US teaspoon therefore shows as 5 ml although its true volume is 4.93 ml.

Worked examples

1 US teaspoon. 1 × 4.92892 = 4.93 ml, displayed as 5 ml. One imperial teaspoon, 5.92 ml, displays as 6 ml.

12 US teaspoons. 12 × 4.92892 = 59.15 ml, displayed as 59 ml. Twelve imperial teaspoons come to 71.03 ml, shown as 71 ml.

100 US teaspoons. 100 × 4.92892 = 492.89 ml, displayed as 493 ml. Larger counts show a smaller rounding error.

3 US teaspoons in liters. One tablespoon is 14.79 ml, which is 0.015 liters once rounded to three decimals.

Practical notes

  • For cooking, treating a teaspoon as 5 ml is fine. If a recipe is very sensitive, such as a pastry glaze or a brine, weigh it on a scale.
  • Check where a recipe comes from. British recipes written decades ago may mean the larger imperial teaspoon.
  • Going the other way, the milliliters to teaspoons converter shows how many spoonfuls an amount in ml makes.
