Pick an ingredient, enter a weight in milligrams, grams or kilograms and read it as cups. The same grams fill a different number of cups for every ingredient.

Turning a weight into a cup measure

European, Australian and many modern recipes list ingredients in grams, while American recipes and most kitchen gadgets use cups. Going from weight to cups means working out how much space that weight occupies, and that depends on the ingredient: 100 g of flour comes to about four fifths of a cup, while 100 g of honey is less than a third of one.

For that reason the converter divides your weight by the ingredient's density to get a volume, then expresses the volume in either US Legal Cups (240 ml) or Imperial Cups (284.13 ml). For example, 100 g of flour is 0.801 US cups, 100 g of granulated sugar is 0.466 and 100 g of water is 0.417.

How to convert grams to cups

  1. Choose the ingredient. Weight conversions depend on it.
  2. Enter the weight in the Convert box and pick MilliGrams, Grams or KiloGrams.
  3. Select the cup type in the To menu. The answer appears immediately, rounded to three decimals.

cups = grams ÷ (density in g/ml × cup volume in ml)Cup volume is 240 ml (US legal) or 284.130625 ml (imperial). Kilograms are multiplied by 1,000 and milligrams divided by 1,000 first.

Worked examples

  • 250 g of flour: 250 ÷ (0.52 × 240) = 2.003, so about 2.003 US cups.
  • 500 g of granulated sugar in imperial cups: 500 ÷ (0.895 × 284.13) = 1.966.
  • 100 g of butter in imperial cups: 100 ÷ (0.959 × 284.13) = 0.367.
  • 1.5 kg of rice: 1,500 ÷ (0.8 × 240) = 7.813 US cups.

Round to the nearest sensible measuring-cup fraction when you cook: 2.003 cups of flour is simply 2 cups, and 125 g of butter is 0.543 cup, a little over half a cup.

How accurate is a grams-to-cups conversion?

The conversion is only as good as the density behind it. Flour packs differently depending on how you fill the cup, brown sugar is measured packed and cocoa settles over time. Treat the result as the cup measure a typical cook would get, not as a guarantee.

If you have a kitchen scale, weigh the ingredient. A weight is the same everywhere, whichever cup the recipe author used.

For the reverse direction use cups to grams, and for spoon-sized amounts try grams to tablespoons. To scale a full recipe, the recipe scaler multiplies every ingredient at once.

Frequently asked questions

How many cups is 250 grams of flour?

About 2.003 US legal cups, or 1.692 imperial cups, using a flour density of 0.52 g/ml.

How many cups is 200 grams of sugar?

0.931 US legal cups for granulated sugar, 0.992 for caster sugar and 1.344 for icing sugar.

Why is 100 g of different ingredients a different number of cups?

Cups measure volume and grams measure weight. Light, airy ingredients like flour and cocoa take up more space per gram than dense ones such as honey or salt.

How many grams make a cup of water?

A US legal cup of water is 240 g, since water weighs about 1 g per milliliter. An imperial cup is about 284 g.
