Milliliters and tablespoons in recipes
A tablespoon is a measuring spoon, not the soup spoon in your cutlery drawer, and its size is set by custom and law rather than by the metric system. Three versions are in everyday use: the US tablespoon (about 14.79 ml), the imperial tablespoon (about 17.76 ml), and the 15 ml metric tablespoon found on many modern measuring sets. Australia uses a larger 20 ml tablespoon.
This converter handles the two traditional tablespoons, and it can also express the amount in teaspoons. The sizes it uses are:
| Unit | Size in milliliters |
|---|---|
| US tablespoon | 14.7868 |
| Imperial tablespoon | 17.7582 |
| US teaspoon | 4.9289 |
| Imperial teaspoon | 5.9194 |
How to convert ml to tablespoons
- Enter the amount in the Convert box and keep MilliLiters, or switch to Liters.
- Open the To menu and pick US Tablespoons, Imp. Tablespoons, US Teaspoons or Imp. Teaspoons.
- The result updates immediately. You can ignore the Ingredient menu, which only affects weight units on the related converters.
US tablespoons = milliliters ÷ 14.7868
imperial tablespoons = milliliters ÷ 17.7582For liters, multiply by 1,000 first. Answers are rounded to three decimals.
Worked examples
50 ml of water. 50 ÷ 14.7868 = 3.3814, so the converter gives 3.381 US tablespoons, or 2.816 imperial tablespoons.
100 ml of milk. 100 ÷ 14.7868 = 6.7628, so that is 6.763 US tablespoons and 5.631 imperial ones, roughly 6¾ level spoonfuls of milk.
15 ml, the metric tablespoon. 15 ÷ 14.7868 = 1.014, so a metric spoonful is only about 1.4% more than a US tablespoon. In imperial tablespoons it is 0.845, because the imperial spoon is the bigger one.

Measuring tips
- Use measuring spoons. Cutlery spoons range from about 10 to 20 ml, so they are not a reliable guide.
- Level, unless told otherwise. A heaped spoon can hold half as much again as a level one.
- Mind the country. If a recipe says tablespoon and comes from Australia, it means 20 ml. This converter has no option for that size, but you can divide by 20 yourself.
- Remember the ratio. Three teaspoons make one tablespoon in both the US and imperial systems.
For larger amounts see the milliliters to cups converter, and for weights use the milliliters to grams converter.
Frequently asked questions
How many milliliters are in a tablespoon?
A US tablespoon holds about 14.79 ml and an imperial tablespoon about 17.76 ml. Many modern measuring sets and nutrition labels round the spoon to 15 ml.
How many tablespoons is 100 ml?
100 ml is 6.763 US tablespoons or 5.631 imperial tablespoons.
Do US and imperial tablespoons differ?
Yes. The imperial tablespoon is about 20% larger than the US one, so the same volume in milliliters gives a smaller number of imperial tablespoons.
How many teaspoons are in a tablespoon?
Three. This holds for the US and the imperial systems, which is why the teaspoon sizes in this converter are exactly one third of the tablespoon sizes.
