How many teaspoons fit in a cup?
A teaspoon is a small measure: a US teaspoon holds 4.929 ml and an imperial teaspoon 5.919 ml. Dividing a cup by one of them gives a large number, which is why recipes usually switch to tablespoons above a few teaspoons.
- US legal cup (240 ml): 48.692 US teaspoons. The 236.59 ml customary cup holds exactly 48.
- Imperial cup (284.13 ml): exactly 48 imperial teaspoons, or 57.646 US teaspoons.
The ingredient menu is part of every recipe converter on this site, but it is only used when a unit is a weight. For this tool you can leave it alone.
How to convert cups to teaspoons
- Enter the number of cups and choose US Legal Cups or Imperial Cups.
- Choose US Teaspoons or Imp. Teaspoons in the To menu.
- The answer appears at once, rounded to three decimals.
US teaspoons = US legal cups × 240 ÷ 4.92892
imperial teaspoons = imperial cups × 284.130625 ÷ 5.91939
Worked examples
- Half a cup: 120 ÷ 4.92892 = 24.346 US teaspoons.
- 3.75 cups: 900 ÷ 4.92892 = 182.596 US teaspoons.
- 2 imperial cups: 2 × 48 = 96 imperial teaspoons.
- 1 imperial cup in US teaspoons: 284.13 ÷ 4.92892 = 57.646.

A small cup fraction is easier to measure with spoons: ⅛ cup is just over 6 teaspoons, which is 2 tablespoons.
Measuring small amounts
Because a teaspoon is only about 1/48 of a cup, tiny rounding errors in the spoon add up if you fill a cup teaspoon by teaspoon. Use a measuring cup for large amounts and spoons only for what is left over. Level dry ingredients with a knife, since a heaped teaspoon can hold noticeably more than a level one.
If the recipe gives teaspoons and you want grams, switch to grams to teaspoons or teaspoons to grams. Related volume conversions: cups to tablespoons and cups to milliliters.
