Teaspoons and cups in cooking recipes
A teaspoon is the smallest measuring spoon in a recipe and a cup is the largest. Three teaspoons make a tablespoon and, in the traditional US system, sixteen tablespoons make a cup, so a cup holds 48 teaspoons.
The converter measures against the 240 ml US legal cup used on nutrition labels. A US teaspoon is about 4.93 ml, so that cup holds 48.69 of them, and 48 teaspoons make 0.986 of a legal cup. An imperial cup (about 284.13 ml) holds almost exactly 48 imperial teaspoons of 5.92 ml each.
How to convert teaspoons to cups
- Type the number of teaspoons into the Convert box and choose US Teaspoons or Imp. Teaspoons.
- Select US Legal Cups or Imperial Cups in the To menu.
- Read the answer below. It updates every time you change a value.
US legal cups = US teaspoons × 4.9289 ÷ 240
imperial cups = imperial teaspoons ÷ 48Answers are rounded to three decimals.
Worked examples
10 US teaspoons. 10 × 4.9289 = 49.29 ml, and 49.29 ÷ 240 = 0.2054, so the converter shows 0.205 cups.
12 US teaspoons. That is 4 tablespoons, or 0.246 cups, about a quarter of a cup.
4 US teaspoons. 4 × 4.9289 ÷ 240 = 0.082 cups, a little under a twelfth of a cup.
6 imperial teaspoons. 6 ÷ 48 = 0.125, an eighth of a cup, and the converter shows 0.125 imperial cups.

Measuring notes
- Count carefully. Counting 48 level teaspoons into a bowl invites mistakes; once you pass about 6 teaspoons, switch to tablespoons or a fraction of a cup.
- Keep the ratios in mind. 3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon, 16 tablespoons = 1 cup, 48 teaspoons = 1 cup.
- Level them off. Spices and baking powder are measured level unless a recipe says heaped.
