Pick an ingredient, enter a weight and read it as tablespoons or teaspoons. A tablespoon of flour and a tablespoon of honey hold very different weights.

How many grams are in a tablespoon?

A tablespoon is a measure of volume, so the weight it holds depends on the ingredient. A US tablespoon is 14.787 ml, which is about 14.8 g of water but only about 7.7 g of flour and as much as 20.7 g of honey.

The converter divides your weight by the ingredient's density to get a volume in milliliters, then divides by the size of the spoon you pick: US Tablespoons (14.787 ml), Imp. Tablespoons (17.758 ml), or the smaller US Teaspoons (4.929 ml) and Imp. Teaspoons (5.919 ml).

How to convert grams to tablespoons

  1. Choose the ingredient. Weight conversions depend on it.
  2. Enter the weight in the Convert box and pick MilliGrams, Grams or KiloGrams.
  3. Choose the spoon size in the To menu. The answer is rounded to three decimals.

tablespoons = grams ÷ (density in g/ml × spoon volume in ml)Use 14.7868 ml for a US tablespoon and 17.7582 ml for an imperial one.

Worked examples

  • 20 g of water: 20 ÷ 14.787 = 1.353 US tablespoons.
  • 50 g of flour: 50 ÷ (0.52 × 14.787) = 6.503 US tablespoons.
  • 15 g of granulated sugar in imperial tablespoons: 15 ÷ (0.895 × 17.758) = 0.944.
  • 100 g of butter: 100 ÷ (0.959 × 14.787) = 7.052 US tablespoons, about 7 tablespoons.
  • 0.25 kg of honey in imperial teaspoons: 30.167.

Reading the chart the other way: one US tablespoon of flour weighs about 8 g, of granulated sugar 13 g, of butter 14 g and of honey 21 g (each rounded to a whole gram).

Spoon-measuring tips

Level every dry spoonful with the back of a knife; a heaped tablespoon can hold noticeably more. For sticky ingredients such as honey or syrup, a spoon coated in a little oil lets the measure slide out cleanly, so you get the full amount.

Spoons differ by country: an Australian tablespoon is 20 ml, and a metric spoon in a measuring set is 15 ml. Make sure the spoon size you choose matches the one in your recipe. For the reverse direction use tablespoons to grams, and for smaller spoons see grams to teaspoons.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a tablespoon of flour?

A level US tablespoon of flour holds about 8 g (14.787 ml × 0.52 g/ml = 7.7 g). Packed flour weighs more.

How many tablespoons is 100 grams of butter?

About 7.052 US tablespoons, which is a little over 7.

How many grams are in a tablespoon of water?

A US tablespoon of water is about 14.8 g. Recipes usually round that to 15 g.

Does the answer change for imperial tablespoons?

Yes. An imperial tablespoon is about 20% bigger than a US one, so the same weight fills fewer of them.
