Grams and teaspoons in cooking
A teaspoon is a unit of volume: 4.929 ml for the US version and 5.919 ml for the imperial one. Because the spoon holds a fixed volume, the weight it carries depends on how dense the ingredient is. A level US teaspoon holds roughly 5 g of water, 6 g of salt, 4.4 g of granulated sugar, 2.6 g of flour and 7 g of honey.
The converter reverses that idea. It turns your weight into a volume using the ingredient's density, then counts how many teaspoons of the chosen size that volume fills.
How to convert grams to teaspoons
- Choose the ingredient. Weight conversions depend on it.
- Enter the weight in the Convert box and pick MilliGrams, Grams or KiloGrams.
- Select US Teaspoons or Imp. Teaspoons in the To menu. The answer is rounded to three decimals.
teaspoons = grams ÷ (density in g/ml × teaspoon volume in ml)A US teaspoon is 4.92892 ml and an imperial teaspoon is 5.91939 ml.
Worked examples
- 5 g of water: 5 ÷ 4.929 = 1.014 US teaspoons, or 0.845 imperial teaspoons.
- 10 g of salt: 10 ÷ (1.2 × 4.929) = 1.691 US teaspoons.
- 8 g of granulated sugar: 8 ÷ (0.895 × 4.929) = 1.813 US teaspoons.
- 12.5 g of flour in imperial teaspoons: 4.061.
- 3,000 mg of chia seeds in imperial teaspoons: 0.714.

Getting small amounts right
A teaspoon is small, so the errors matter more than with cups. A heaped spoon of salt can carry noticeably more than a level one, and fine table salt packs differently from coarse flaky salt of the same weight. If a recipe depends on a precise pinch of salt or yeast, a small digital scale that reads to 0.1 g is the surest route.
For larger amounts see grams to tablespoons, and to turn spoons back into weight use teaspoons to grams. The grams to ml converter gives the volume behind the answer.
Frequently asked questions
How many teaspoons is 5 grams?
For water, 5 g is 1.014 US teaspoons. For sugar it is about 1.133 and for salt about 0.845, so it depends on the ingredient.
How many teaspoons is 10 grams of salt?
About 1.691 US teaspoons, using a salt density of 1.2 g/ml.
How many grams are in a teaspoon of sugar?
A level US teaspoon of granulated sugar holds about 4.4 g, using a density of 0.895 g/ml.
Why do imperial teaspoons give fewer teaspoons?
An imperial teaspoon holds 5.92 ml against 4.93 ml for a US one, so the same weight fills about 17% fewer of them.
