How many gigabytes are in a petabyte?
1 GB = 1,000,000 PB in SI counting, the system that the International System of Units defines and storage vendors use. In binary counting 1 GiB = 1,048,576 PiB; the binary units carry the IEC names gibibytes and pebibytes.
PB = GB × 1,000,000 (SI)
PiB = GiB × 1,048,576 (binary)
The converter opens with Use SI standard ticked. Clear the box to count in powers of 1,024; the labels then change to GiB and PiB, so you can tell which system an answer belongs to.
Where GB to PB comes up
Anyone summing many small things, such as photos, backups, logs or user uploads, ends up with a total in gigabytes that is awkwardly long. Restating a figure such as 12,000,000 GB as 12 PB makes it easy to read and to compare with the capacity of a storage system.
How to convert GB to PB
- Type the number of gigabytes in the first box.
- Leave Use SI standard ticked for thousands, or clear it for 1,024s.
- The PetaBytes box shows the answer as you type.
The digits are computed exactly, not through floating-point numbers, so very large sizes keep every digit. Answers of 0.1 or more are rounded to four decimal places and smaller ones keep six significant digits. Anything beyond 100 digits or a power of ten above 100 reads "Number too large".
Example: 750000 GB
Take 750000 GB. In SI counting that is 750000 × 1,000,000 = 750,000,000,000 PB. In binary counting it is 750000 × 1,048,576 = 786,432,000,000 PiB, using GiB and PiB.

| 100 | 100,000,000 | 104,857,600 |
| 1,000 | 1,000,000,000 | 1,048,576,000 |
| 10,000 | 10,000,000,000 | 10,485,760,000 |
| 100,000 | 100,000,000,000 | 104,857,600,000 |
| 500,000 | 500,000,000,000 | 524,288,000,000 |
| 1,000,000 | 1,000,000,000,000 | 1,048,576,000,000 |
| 5,000,000 | 5,000,000,000,000 | 5,242,880,000,000 |

Mistakes to avoid
- Mixing the two systems. 1 GB = 1,000,000 PB, but 1 GiB = 1,048,576 PiB. A number counted one way must not be compared with one counted the other.
- Confusing bytes and bits. PB with a capital B is bytes; a lowercase b is bits, an eighth the size.
- Reading a labelled capacity as a binary one. Drive and cloud capacities are sold in SI units, while some operating systems report in binary units under the SI names.
GB to PB Converter FAQ
What is 750000 GB in PB?
750000 GB is 750,000,000,000 PB in SI counting and 786,432,000,000 PiB in binary counting.
Why is 1,000,000 GB not exactly 1 PiB?
A gigabyte is 109 bytes and a pebibyte is 250 bytes, so 1,000,000 GB is only 1015 bytes, about 0.888 PiB. With the SI box cleared, 1,048,576 GiB is exactly 1 PiB.
Is the answer exact?
Yes. The input is read as an exact decimal and the factors are whole numbers, so every digit shown is correct; only the last shown place is rounded.
