Enter a speed in Mbps and the matching value in Kbps appears right away. The guide shows the factor, a worked example and a lookup table.

How many Kbps are in one Mbps?

A megabit per second equals 1,000 kilobits per second. Network and media speeds follow the decimal SI system, where mega stands for a million and kilo for a thousand, so each Mbps is simply a thousand Kbps.

Kbps = Mbps × 1,000To go back, divide by 1,000.

Because the factor is a clean power of ten, the conversion only shifts the decimal point three places to the right. No rounding is involved unless your input has more than a few decimals.

Difference between Mbps and Kbps

Both measure bits per second, so they describe the same quantity at different sizes. Mbps is the scale for modern broadband and video; Kbps is the finer scale used for audio bitrates, voice calls and the low-bandwidth links of earlier decades. Converting to Kbps is handy when a service quotes a requirement in kilobits, such as a voice codec, while your plan is given in megabits.

Be careful with capital letters. A lowercase b stands for bit, and an uppercase B for byte, so Kbps and KBps are not interchangeable: the second is eight times larger.

How to convert Mbps to Kbps

  1. Take the speed in megabits per second.
  2. Multiply it by 1,000, which moves the decimal point three places to the right.
  3. Read the answer in kilobits per second.

The converter prints up to four decimal places and no thousands separators, so 1.5 Mbps appears as 1500 Kbps.

Example: sizing a voice and video setup

Suppose a video-conferencing app asks for 1.2 Mbps per participant and a voice-only app for 0.064 Mbps. In kilobits those are 1.2 × 1,000 = 1,200 Kbps and 0.064 × 1,000 = 64 Kbps. With a 4.5 Mbps (4,500 Kbps) connection you could host three video participants (3,600 Kbps) and still have 900 Kbps spare for fourteen voice-only ones (896 Kbps).

Common mistakes

  • Multiplying by 1,024. That belongs to binary storage prefixes, not to data rates. The factor here is 1,000.
  • Swapping the direction. Kbps numbers are always bigger than the Mbps number they come from. If your result is smaller, you divided instead of multiplying.
  • Mixing in bytes. If a requirement is in KB/s or MB/s, convert to bits first by multiplying by eight, then use the factor of 1,000.

The reverse conversion is the Kbps to Mbps converter. For turning a speed into a transfer time, use the download time calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How many Kbps are in 1 Mbps?

1,000. Multiply a value in Mbps by 1,000 to get Kbps.

How many Kbps is 0.5 Mbps?

0.5 × 1,000 = 500 Kbps.

Does Mbps to Kbps use 1,024?

No. Data rates use decimal SI prefixes, so the factor is exactly 1,000.

Is Kbps the same as KB/s?

No. Kbps counts kilobits per second and KB/s counts kilobytes per second. A kilobyte holds eight kilobits, so KB/s figures are one eighth as large.
