EB to PB Converter

Tick to count in thousands (1 EB = 1,000 PB), as the International System of Units defines the prefixes. Clear it to count in powers of 1,024 with the binary units (1 EiB = 1,024 PiB).

Type a size in exabytes and read it in petabytes. The box multiplies by 1,000; clear the SI box to multiply by 1,024.

How many petabytes are in a exabyte?

1 PB = 1,000 EB in SI counting, the system that the International System of Units defines and storage vendors use. In binary counting 1 PiB = 1,024 EiB; the binary units carry the IEC names pebibytes and exbibytes.

PB = EB ÷ 1,000 (SI)

PiB = EiB ÷ 1,024 (binary)

The converter opens with Use SI standard ticked. Clear the box to count in powers of 1,024; the labels then change to EiB and PiB, so you can tell which system an answer belongs to.

Where EB to PB comes up

Industry reports quote worldwide data volumes in exabytes, while a single company's storage is usually discussed in petabytes. Multiplying an exabyte figure by 1,000 gives the petabyte count, which tells you how many large installations the total would fill.

How to convert EB to PB

  1. Type the number of exabytes in the first box.
  2. Leave Use SI standard ticked for thousands, or clear it for 1,024s.
  3. The PetaBytes box shows the answer as you type.

The digits are computed exactly, not through floating-point numbers, so very large sizes keep every digit. Answers of 0.1 or more are rounded to four decimal places and smaller ones keep six significant digits. Anything beyond 100 digits or a power of ten above 100 reads "Number too large".

Example: 3.2 EB

Take 3.2 EB. In SI counting that is 3.2 ÷ 1,000 = 0.0032 PB. In binary counting it is 3.2 ÷ 1,024 = 0.003125 PiB, using EiB and PiB.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing the two systems. 1 PB = 1,000 EB, but 1 PiB = 1,024 EiB. A number counted one way must not be compared with one counted the other.
  • Confusing bytes and bits. EB with a capital B is bytes; a lowercase b is bits, an eighth the size.
  • Reading a labelled capacity as a binary one. Drive and cloud capacities are sold in SI units, while some operating systems report in binary units under the SI names.

EB to PB Converter FAQ

What is 3.2 EB in PB?

3.2 EB is 0.0032 PB in SI counting and 0.003125 PiB in binary counting.

Why is 1 EiB more than 1,000 PiB?

Binary prefixes step by 1,024, not 1,000, so 1 EiB is 1,024 PiB. Clear the SI box to see this; with it ticked the page uses the decimal exabyte, 1,000 PB.

Is the answer exact?

Yes. The input is read as an exact decimal and the factors are whole numbers, so every digit shown is correct; only the last shown place is rounded.
