Type an amount in megabits and the size in megabytes appears as you go, rounded to four decimals. Tick the SI box to divide by exactly 8.

How many megabytes are in a megabit?

Eight bits make a byte, so under SI definitions 1 Mbit = 0.125 MB and 8 Mbit make exactly 1 MB. The converter's default divides by a little more than 8, because it counts a megabyte as 1,048,576 bytes while a megabit remains 1,000,000 bits: 8 Mbit = 0.9537 MB. Ticking Use SI standard makes both units decimal and the divisor exactly 8.

SI: MB = Mbit ÷ 8

default: MB = Mbit ÷ 8 ÷ 1.048576 = Mbit ÷ 8.388608

Difference between Mbit and MB

Megabits and megabytes both measure an amount of data. The megabit is the natural unit for what is carried over a communications link, while the megabyte is the natural unit for what is stored in a file. The same payload therefore looks eight times larger in megabits than in megabytes, and converting from Mbit to MB makes the number smaller.

Because one letter's case separates the symbols, it pays to read carefully: lowercase b is a bit, uppercase B is a byte. If your figures involve time, such as megabits per second, use the Mbps to MB/s converter instead.

How to convert Mbit to MB

  1. Enter the amount in megabits.
  2. Leave Use SI standard clear to divide by 8.388608, or tick it to divide by 8.
  3. Read the size in megabytes.

The answer is rounded to four decimal places and shown without thousands separators.

Example: a 120 Mbit video clip

In SI counting, 120 ÷ 8 = 15 MB. With the default binary megabyte, 120 ÷ 8.388608 = 14.30511474609375, which the converter shows as 14.3051 MB. The clip contains the same bits either way; the smaller number simply reflects a larger megabyte.

For a quick sanity check, 64 Mbit comes to 8 MB in SI terms and to 7.6294 MB with the default factor.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to divide by 8. A 100 Mbit amount is about 12.5 MB, not 100 MB.
  • Applying the binary divisor to decimal data. If your megabyte figure comes from a source that uses 1,000,000 bytes, tick the SI box or your answer will be about 4.6% too small.
  • Reading the rounded value as exact. Four decimals are displayed, so 1 Mbit appears as 0.1192 even though its full value in the default mode is 0.11920928955078125.

The opposite conversion lives in the MB to Mbit converter, and the download time calculator combines these units with a connection speed.

Frequently asked questions

How many MB is 1 Mbit?

In SI terms 1 Mbit is 0.125 MB. With the default binary megabyte it is about 0.1192 MB.

How many megabits make a megabyte?

Eight in SI terms. With the default binary megabyte it takes 8.388608 megabits to make one megabyte.

Why is 8 Mbit shown as 0.9537 MB and not 1 MB?

The default counts a megabyte as 1,048,576 bytes but a megabit as 1,000,000 bits. Tick Use SI standard to count both in decimal and get exactly 1 MB.

Is Mbit the same as Mb?

Yes, both are used for megabit. The spelled-out Mbit avoids confusion with MB, the megabyte.
