Enter a transfer rate in megabytes per second and read it in megabits per second straight away. Use the SI box if you want a clean factor of 8.

How many Mbps are in one MB/s?

A byte contains eight bits, so a transfer rate of one megabyte per second is 8 megabits per second in SI terms. The converter's default adds one refinement. It treats the megabyte as 1,048,576 bytes, the way operating systems and file managers do, but keeps the megabit at 1,000,000 bits, the way network equipment does. With that mix, 1 MB/s = 8.388608 Mbps.

SI: Mbps = MB/s × 8

default: Mbps = MB/s × 8 × 1.048576 = MB/s × 8.388608

Tick Use SI standard if the MB/s figure comes from a source that counts in decimal units, such as a drive's specification sheet.

Difference between MB/s and Mbps

Both describe how fast data moves, but they count different things. MB/s counts megabytes, the unit used by file-copy dialogs, download managers and drive benchmarks. Mbps counts megabits, the unit used by internet providers, Wi-Fi standards and streaming services. Since a megabyte is larger, the MB/s number is always the smaller of the two for the same speed.

The two symbols differ by one letter case, which is why mix-ups are so frequent. A plan advertised at 200 Mbps will not make a download show 200 MB/s: the ceiling is 200 ÷ 8 = 25 MB/s, and real transfers usually land somewhat below that.

How to convert MB/s to Mbps

  1. Enter the speed in megabytes per second.
  2. Multiply by 8.388608 (default) or by 8 (with Use SI standard ticked).
  3. Read the speed in megabits per second.

The answer is rounded to four decimal places and shown without thousands separators.

Example: a browser download at 12 MB/s

In SI counting 12 MB/s is 12 × 8 = 96 Mbps. With the binary megabyte it is 12 × 8.388608 = 100.663296, shown as 100.6633 Mbps. Either way you need a connection comfortably above that rating to sustain the download, because real-world efficiency is lower than the line rate.

A second case: a solid-state drive rated at 550 MB/s moves 550 × 8 = 4,400 Mbps in SI counting, or 4,613.7344 Mbps with the default factor.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the two units as equal. Mbps and MB/s differ by a factor of about 8; forgetting it is the classic reason a fast plan seems slow.
  • Expecting the full line rate. Protocol overhead, Wi-Fi conditions and server limits keep real downloads below the rated speed.
  • Mixing conventions. If your MB/s figure is a decimal one, convert with the SI option; otherwise the default will overstate the result by about 4.9%.

Frequently asked questions

How many Mbps is 1 MB/s?

Exactly 8 Mbps in SI terms. With the default binary megabyte it is 8.388608 Mbps, displayed as 8.3886.

Is Mbps the same as MB/s?

No. Mbps is megabits per second and MB/s is megabytes per second. One MB/s corresponds to about 8 Mbps.

Why would my download show lower MB/s than my plan suggests?

Dividing the plan speed by 8 gives the ceiling in MB/s. Protocol overhead, Wi-Fi and the server you download from usually bring the real figure down further.

What does the SI checkbox change?

It changes the size of a megabyte from 1,048,576 bytes to 1,000,000 bytes, which turns the factor from 8.388608 into exactly 8.
