Type a size in bytes and read it in megabytes. The default divisor is 1,048,576; tick the SI box to divide by 1,000,000 instead.

How many bytes are in a megabyte?

Two answers are in everyday use. Computer memory and many operating systems count in powers of two, so for them 1 MB = 1,024 × 1,024 = 1,048,576 bytes. The International System of Units reads the prefix mega as a plain million, so under SI 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes.

binary: MB = bytes ÷ 1,048,576

SI: MB = bytes ÷ 1,000,000

The gap between the two is about 4.9%, so the same file shows two different sizes depending on whose rules the software follows. This converter defaults to the binary count and switches to SI when you tick Use SI standard.

Difference between bytes and MB

A byte is eight bits, enough for one character of simple text. A megabyte is a convenient bundle of a million-odd of them, used for things like photos, songs and installers. Going from bytes to megabytes means dividing, so the number gets about a million times smaller.

To remove the ambiguity, the IEC introduced separate names: the mebibyte (MiB) is exactly 1,048,576 bytes and the megabyte (MB) is exactly 1,000,000. In practice Windows still prints binary sizes with the MB label, while macOS (from version 10.6) and drive manufacturers use the decimal meaning.

How to convert bytes to megabytes

  1. Enter the size in bytes.
  2. Leave the SI box clear for binary megabytes, or tick it for decimal megabytes.
  3. The MegaBytes box updates at once; changing the SI box recalculates it.

The answer is rounded to four decimal places and shown without thousands separators. That means a very small input disappears: below about 52.43 bytes (binary) or 50 bytes (SI) the result rounds to 0. Leaving the input empty keeps whatever answer was shown before.

Example: a 5,000,000-byte download

Binary: 5,000,000 ÷ 1,048,576 = 4.7684 MB. SI: 5,000,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 5 MB. A bigger file, 123,456,789 bytes, comes to 117.7376 MB in binary terms and 123.4568 MB in SI terms.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing sizes from different programs. If one tool uses binary and another SI, their megabyte figures will disagree by roughly 5% even for an identical file.
  • Mixing bits and bytes. The converter works in bytes (capital B). If your figure is in bits, first use the bits to bytes converter.
  • Going the wrong way. To turn megabytes back into bytes, use the MB to bytes converter.

Frequently asked questions

How many bytes are in 1 MB?

1 MB is 1,048,576 bytes under the binary convention and 1,000,000 bytes under the SI convention.

How do I convert bytes to MB?

Divide the byte count by 1,048,576 for binary megabytes, or by 1,000,000 for SI megabytes.

What does the SI checkbox do?

It switches the divisor from 1,048,576 to 1,000,000, so the result follows the decimal definition of a megabyte instead of the binary one.

Why does my small file show 0 MB?

The result is rounded to four decimal places. A file under about 53 bytes in binary counting is less than 0.00005 MB and therefore displays as 0.
