Enter a speed in gigabits per second and the megabit figure appears as you type. One gigabit per second is 1,000 megabits per second.

How many Mbps are in 1 Gbps?

One gigabit per second is 1,000 megabits per second. Data-rate units follow the decimal SI prefixes everywhere, in network standards, on internet plans and in hardware datasheets, so there is no binary alternative to choose and the tool has no SI switch.

Mbps = Gbps × 1,000

Gbps = Mbps ÷ 1,000

A quick mental check: moving the decimal point three places to the right turns gigabits into megabits, so 0.5 Gbps is 500 Mbps and 2.5 Gbps is 2,500 Mbps.

Difference between Gbps and Mbps

Both measure how many bits cross a link each second. Mbps (megabits per second) is the unit of ordinary broadband and Wi-Fi; Gbps (gigabits per second) is used for fibre connections, data-centre links and fast local networks such as Gigabit Ethernet (1 Gbps) and 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 Gbps).

Watch the capitalisation. Mbps with a lowercase b counts bits, whereas MBps or MB/s counts bytes, which are eight times larger. A 1 Gbps link can therefore carry at most 125 megabytes per second (1,000 ÷ 8), and real transfers land below that because of protocol overhead, disk speed and distance.

How to convert Gbps to Mbps

  1. Type the speed in gigabits per second.
  2. The Mbps box shows the value multiplied by 1,000.
  3. Read or copy the result.

The answer is rounded to four decimal places, so tiny speeds still show a precise figure: 0.0001 Gbps is 0.1 Mbps. Clearing the Gbps box after typing resets the result to 0.

Example: a multi-gig home connection

A 2.5 Gbps plan equals 2.5 × 1,000 = 2,500 Mbps. Suppose you want to download a 5 GB game on a 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps) link. 5 GB is about 40,000 megabits, so the best case is 40,000 ÷ 1,000 = 40 seconds. The download time calculator handles this kind of estimate directly, including overhead.

Common mistakes

  • Treating bits as bytes. A download manager showing 12.5 MB/s is moving 100 Mbps of data, not 12.5. Divide megabits by 8 to get megabytes.
  • Using 1,024. Link speeds are decimal, so 1 Gbps is exactly 1,000 Mbps, unlike storage sizes where 1,024 sometimes appears.
  • Reading a plan's headline speed as a guarantee. Many plans say "up to" a speed, and Wi-Fi link rates are typically well above the throughput you actually get.

Frequently asked questions

How many Mbps are in 1 Gbps?

1 Gbps is 1,000 Mbps.

How do I convert Gbps to Mbps?

Multiply the number of gigabits per second by 1,000. For example, 4 Gbps × 1,000 = 4,000 Mbps.

Is Gbps the same as GBps?

No. Gbps is gigabits per second and GBps (or GB/s) is gigabytes per second. One GBps equals 8 Gbps.

Why is a 1 Gbps connection not downloading at 1,000 MB/s?

1 Gbps is 1,000 megabits per second, which is at most 125 megabytes per second. Overhead from the protocols and the speed of the storage at either end lower the real figure further.
