Using the timesheet converter
Pick a direction with the Convert option.
- Time to Decimal: enter hours and minutes, then choose whether the decimal answer should be in hours or in minutes. Empty boxes count as zero and the answer is rounded to two decimal places.
- Decimal to Time: enter a decimal number and say whether it counts hours or minutes. The converter returns whole hours and whole minutes.
Switching direction empties the time and answer boxes, so you can start a new entry without old figures lingering.
The conversion formulas
decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60
minutes = (decimal hours − whole hours) × 60
The first formula takes you from a clock-style duration to a single number you can multiply by a pay rate. The second reverses it: the part after the decimal point is a fraction of an hour, and multiplying it by 60 turns it into minutes.
Timesheet conversion examples
Time to decimal. 6 hours 25 minutes: 25 ÷ 60 = 0.4167, so the total is 6.42 hours.
Minutes to decimal. A 40 minute entry is 40 ÷ 60 = 0.67 hours. With the answer set to minutes, 7 hours 15 minutes is 7 × 60 + 15 = 435 minutes.
Hours to decimal. A whole number of hours needs no conversion: 8 hours 0 minutes is 8 decimal hours.
Decimal to time. 8.25 hours: the fraction 0.25 × 60 = 15, so 8 hours 15 minutes. 250 decimal minutes is 4 hours 10 minutes, because 250 = 4 × 60 + 10.
A weekly total
Monday to Friday a person works 8:20, 7:45, 9:10, 6:35 and 8:00. In minutes that is 500 + 465 + 550 + 395 + 480 = 2,390. Enter 39 hours and 50 minutes (2,390 ÷ 60 = 39 remainder 50) to get 39.83 decimal hours.
Converting the total once matters. At a rate of 20 per hour the exact total (39.8333 hours) is 796.67, while multiplying the rounded 39.83 gives 796.60. A few cents per week can add up across a payroll, so convert after adding rather than before. The time card calculator can add start and end times directly.
Rounding rules for pay periods differ between employers and jurisdictions. Treat these figures as a calculation aid and check your own policy. See the disclaimer.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert 6 hours 25 minutes to decimal?
Divide the minutes by 60 (25 ÷ 60 = 0.4167) and add the hours. The result is 6.42 hours to two decimal places.
How do I turn a decimal timesheet entry back into hours and minutes?
Keep the whole number as the hours and multiply the fraction by 60 for the minutes. For example 8.25 hours is 8 hours and 0.25 × 60 = 15 minutes.
Why does the converter empty my boxes when I change direction?
The old figures belong to the previous conversion. Clearing them prevents a result from one direction being read as an input for the other.
Should I round each daily entry or only the weekly total?
Add the minutes first and convert the total once. Rounding each day to two decimals can drift by a few hundredths of an hour over a week.
