What is decimal time?

Decimal time writes a duration as one number of hours, with the part of an hour after the decimal point: 7.5 hours means seven and a half hours. Payroll and timesheet systems prefer it because durations can be added and multiplied by a rate in a single step. People, on the other hand, think in hours and minutes, which is why a conversion is needed.

The catch is that an hour has 60 minutes, not 100. A decimal of 0.5 is half an hour (30 minutes) and 0.25 is a quarter hour (15 minutes), but 0.30 is not 30 minutes. It is 0.30 × 60 = 18 minutes.

How to convert decimal hours to hours and minutes

  1. The whole number before the decimal point is the number of hours.
  2. Multiply the fraction after the decimal point by 60. The result is the minutes.
  3. Round the minutes to the nearest whole number if you need to.

minutes = (decimal hours − whole hours) × 60

Example 1. 7.75 hours: the whole part is 7 and 0.75 × 60 = 45, so the time is 7 hours 45 minutes (465 minutes in total).

Example 2. 12.4 hours: 0.4 × 60 = 24, so 12 hours 24 minutes.

Example 3. 8.33 hours: 0.33 × 60 = 19.8, which rounds to 20, giving 8 hours 20 minutes. This is the same as 8⅓ hours, because a third of an hour is exactly 20 minutes.

How to convert decimal minutes to hours and minutes

Switch the drop-down to minutes when your figure is already a number of minutes. Divide by 60: the whole-number part of the quotient is the hours and the remainder is the minutes.

hours = floor(minutes ÷ 60), leftover minutes = minutes − hours × 60

Example. 105 minutes ÷ 60 = 1 remainder 45, so 1 hour 45 minutes. For a fraction of a minute, such as 45.5 minutes, the converter rounds half up to the nearest whole minute, giving 46.

Limits of the converter

  • Answers are whole numbers. Seconds are not shown, so 0.0125 hours (45 seconds) appears as 1 minute.
  • The "Also equal to" box gives the total in minutes. Every answer box is a number field, so large totals are written as plain digits without a thousands separator: 100 hours gives a total of 6000 minutes, and 1500 minutes gives 25 hours 0 minutes.
  • Negative figures are processed, with the sign carried through to both the hours and the minutes.

To go the other way, from hours and minutes back to a decimal, use the time to decimal converter. For a full week of entries, the time card calculator adds up shifts directly, and the timesheet converter handles both directions on one form.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert 7.5 hours to hours and minutes?

The whole part is 7 hours. The fraction 0.5 × 60 = 30 minutes. So 7.5 hours is 7 hours 30 minutes.

Is 0.30 hours the same as 30 minutes?

No. 0.30 hours is 0.30 × 60 = 18 minutes. Thirty minutes is 0.5 hours.

How many minutes is 0.25 hours?

0.25 × 60 = 15 minutes, a quarter of an hour.

Why do timesheets use decimal hours?

A single decimal number is easy to total and to multiply by an hourly rate, so payroll software stores and displays time that way even though people write hours and minutes.
