Time zone basics
A time zone is a region that keeps one official clock time. Zones are defined by their offset from UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), the world's reference time. New York in winter is UTC−5, Tokyo is UTC+9 all year, and London is UTC+0 in winter and UTC+1 in summer.
Offsets are mostly whole hours, but not always: India is UTC+5:30, Iran UTC+3:30 and Nepal UTC+5:45. Governments set their own rules, so zone borders follow political boundaries more than lines of longitude, and rules change from time to time.
The offset of a place can also change with the seasons because of daylight saving time, covered further down. Converting a time between two places therefore needs both the zones and the date.
Using the time zone converter
- Set the date with the month menu and the day and year boxes. The form opens on today's date.
- Enter the time on a 24 hour clock: hours from 0 to 23, then minutes and seconds if you need them. Empty boxes count as zero.
- Pick the zone the time is in under From and the zone you want under To. Each menu entry is a zone's standard UTC offset with regions that follow it, so choose the one that covers your city.
- Choose whether to adjust for DST. Yes applies daylight saving on the date you entered, in both zones. No converts with the standard offsets only, so in summer the result can differ by an hour from the real clock, and the zone label may still show the daylight abbreviation.
The answer appears twice: In your locale follows the date and time style of your browser's language, and 24h format shows the same moment on a 24 hour clock. Both end with the zone abbreviation, such as PDT or GMT+5:30.
The calculation uses the time zone database built into your browser, so very old dates and recently changed rules depend on your browser's data. Around the hour a clock jumps forward or back, a time can be ambiguous or not exist at all; double check results close to those moments. The year box accepts 1970 or later.
US time zones
| Zone | Standard time | Daylight time | Example cities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eastern | UTC−5 (EST) | UTC−4 (EDT) | New York, Atlanta, Miami, Toronto |
| Central | UTC−6 (CST) | UTC−5 (CDT) | Chicago, Houston, Winnipeg |
| Mountain | UTC−7 (MST) | UTC−6 (MDT) | Denver, Salt Lake City, Calgary |
| Pacific | UTC−8 (PST) | UTC−7 (PDT) | Los Angeles, Seattle, Vancouver |
| Alaska | UTC−9 (AKST) | UTC−8 (AKDT) | Anchorage |
| Hawaii | UTC−10 (HST) | not observed | Honolulu |
A quick rule for the mainland: each zone moving west is one hour earlier, so noon in New York is 11:00 in Chicago, 10:00 in Denver and 9:00 in Los Angeles.
Common world time zones
| Offset | Example places |
|---|---|
| UTC+0 | London (winter), Reykjavik, Accra |
| UTC+1 | Paris and Berlin (winter), Lagos |
| UTC+2 | Athens (winter), Johannesburg |
| UTC+3 | Istanbul, Moscow, Nairobi |
| UTC+4 | Dubai |
| UTC+5:30 | Mumbai, Colombo |
| UTC+7 | Bangkok, Jakarta |
| UTC+8 | Beijing, Singapore, Perth |
| UTC+9 | Tokyo, Seoul |
| UTC+10 | Brisbane, Sydney (winter) |
| UTC+12 | Auckland (winter), Fiji |
Daylight saving time (DST)
Daylight saving time moves the clock forward by an hour for part of the year. It matters for conversions because the gap between two places can change twice a year when they switch on different days.
In 2026 the United States and Canada switch on 8 March (clocks forward) and 1 November (back), while the European Union switches on 29 March and 25 October. For about three weeks in spring and one week in autumn, New York is only four hours behind London instead of the usual five. Japan, China, India and most of the tropics do not use DST at all.

To convert plain durations rather than clock times, use the time converter. To read or create a numeric timestamp, use the Unix timestamp converter.
Frequently asked questions
What is the time difference between New York and London?
Five hours for most of the year (New York is behind London). It shrinks to four hours for roughly three weeks in March and one week in October to November, because the US and Europe change their clocks on different dates.
What is UTC and how is it different from GMT?
UTC is the modern world standard for time, kept by atomic clocks. GMT is the older mean solar time at Greenwich and is also the name of the UK's winter time. For civil purposes both are the UTC+0 offset.
Does the converter handle daylight saving time automatically?
Yes, when the Adjust for DST option is set to Yes it applies the daylight saving rules for the date you enter, using your browser's time zone data.
What does the "In your locale" line mean?
It is the converted date and time written in the style of your browser's language setting, for example month/day/year with AM and PM in US English. The 24h format line shows the same moment on a 24 hour clock.
