Enter hours and minutes and the converter returns the total as decimal hours or as minutes. Empty boxes count as zero, and the answer is rounded to two decimal places.

Using the time to decimal converter

Type the hours into the first box and the minutes into the second. Pick hours or minutes in the drop-down next to the answer. A box you leave empty is treated as zero, so you can convert 45 minutes by typing only the minutes. Both boxes accept decimals, which is useful when part of a time has already been converted.

How to convert time to decimal

An hour has 60 minutes, so minutes are divided by 60 before they are added to the hours.

decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60

decimal minutes = hours × 60 + minutes

Example 1. 1 hour 30 minutes: 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5, so the total is 1.5 hours (or 90 minutes).

Example 2. 7 hours 59 minutes: 59 ÷ 60 = 0.9833, so the total is 7.9833, shown as 7.98 hours.

Example 3. 2 hours 15 minutes in minutes: 2 × 60 + 15 = 135 minutes.

Example 4. 3 hours 7 minutes: 7 ÷ 60 = 0.1167, so 3.12 hours.

Why convert to decimal time?

Pay is usually calculated by multiplying hours by a rate, and that is only practical with a single number. Someone who worked 7 hours 45 minutes at 18 per hour earns 7.75 × 18 = 139.50, whereas multiplying "7:45" directly makes no sense. Project billing, utilisation reports and spreadsheets work the same way.

Add first, convert once. Rounding each entry to two decimals can leave you a hair off. Three 20 minute tasks give 0.33 + 0.33 + 0.33 = 0.99 hours when converted one by one, but together they last 60 minutes, which is exactly 1 hour. Total the minutes first, then convert the result. The time card calculator totals a whole week of start and end times for you.

Employers and countries apply their own rounding rules to pay periods. Use this converter as a calculation aid and check your payroll policy. See the disclaimer.
