Type a speed in meters per second and the converter returns miles per hour, rounded to six decimal places. One m/s is about 2.236936 mph.

How many miles per hour are in one meter per second?

One meter per second equals approximately 2.236936 miles per hour. The more complete value is 2.2369362920544…, and it has no end because the factor is a ratio of 3,600 seconds to 1,609.344 meters that does not divide out evenly.

mph = m/s × 3,600 ÷ 1,609.344 ≈ m/s × 2.236936The two constants are the seconds in an hour and the meters in an international mile.

Going from mph to m/s is exact, because 1 mph = 0.44704 m/s with no rounding; see the mph to m/s converter.

When this conversion comes up

Scientific and technical sources report speeds in meters per second, while readers in the United States and the United Kingdom think in miles per hour. The two meet whenever a wind measurement, a ball-tracking figure, a wind-tunnel result or a textbook answer has to be explained to a general audience.

A few reference points make the numbers easier to feel. A speed of 5 m/s is a comfortable cycling pace at around 11 mph, 15 m/s is roughly 34 mph, and 30 m/s is just over 67 mph, which is highway speed.

How to convert m/s to mph

  1. Enter the speed in meters per second in the first box.
  2. The speed in miles per hour fills the second box while you type.
  3. Take the result. Six decimals are shown at most, with trailing zeros trimmed.

Example 1 (sound). At 20 °C sound moves at about 343 m/s. Then 343 × 2.236936 ≈ 767.27 mph.

Example 2 (a gust). A wind gust of 25 m/s is 25 × 2.236936 ≈ 55.92 mph.

Example 3 (light). Light in a vacuum travels at 299,792,458 m/s, which is about 670,616,629.38 mph, or roughly 670.6 million miles per hour.

Shortcuts for estimating

Multiplying by 2.25 gets you within about 0.6% of the true answer, and multiplying by 2.24 is within 0.14%. For a mental check, remember that 10 m/s is about 22.4 mph, and scale up or down from there. Using 2.2 is quicker but already 1.7% low: it turns 343 m/s into 754.6 mph rather than 767.3 mph.

Avoiding common errors

  • Dividing instead of multiplying. An hour holds 3,600 seconds while a mile holds only 1,609.344 meters, so the speed figure grows when you go from m/s to mph. If your answer came out smaller than the input, the operation was flipped.
  • Rounding the factor too hard. 2.2 or 2.24 are fine for a rough idea but accumulate error in longer calculations. Keep at least four decimals when you reuse the figure.
  • Using the nautical mile. Knots are based on 1,852 m, so they are a separate unit from mph. For knots, feet per second and yards per second use the speed converter.

If you want kilometers per hour instead, use the m/s to km/h converter. To work out a speed from a distance and a time, try the speed, distance and time calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How many mph is 1 m/s?

About 2.236936 mph. The longer value is 2.2369362920544… mph.

How do I convert m/s to mph by hand?

Multiply by 2.236936. For example, 20 m/s × 2.236936 = 44.73872 mph, which rounds to 44.74 mph.

Why is the m/s to mph factor not an exact number?

Because it is 3,600 ÷ 1,609.344, and that division does not terminate. The mph to m/s factor, 0.44704, is exact.

How fast is 343 m/s in miles per hour?

343 m/s is about 767.27 mph, which is the commonly quoted speed of sound in air at 20 °C.
