How many km/h are in one meter per second?
One meter per second is exactly 3.6 kilometers per hour. Both units are metric, so the relationship comes from nothing more than a change of length and time scale.
A meter is 0.001 km, and a second is 1/3,600 of an hour. Traveling 1 m in 1 s therefore means traveling 0.001 km in 1/3,600 h, which is 0.001 × 3,600 = 3.6 km per hour.
km/h = m/s × 3.6To go back, divide by 3.6: m/s = km/h ÷ 3.6.
The reverse conversion has its own page, the km/h to m/s converter.
Meters per second and kilometers per hour compared
Meters per second is the SI unit of speed. It appears in physics problems, engineering data sheets, sports science and in the wind reports of several national weather services. It is convenient when distances are short and times are measured in seconds.
Kilometers per hour is the unit on road signs and speedometers across most of the world. It suits journeys that last minutes or hours. Because a km/h figure is 3.6 times larger than the same speed in m/s, a number that sounds modest in one unit can sound fast in the other, so it helps to keep one or two anchors in mind: 10 m/s is 36 km/h, and 1 m/s is a slow walk at 3.6 km/h.
How to convert m/s to km/h
- Enter the speed in meters per second in the upper box.
- The kilometers-per-hour figure shows up below it as you type.
- Copy the result. Up to six decimals are shown and trailing zeros are removed.
Example 1 (sound). Sound travels at roughly 343 m/s in air at 20 °C. Multiplying, 343 × 3.6 = 1,234.8 km/h.
Example 2 (walking). A typical walking speed of 1.4 m/s becomes 1.4 × 3.6 = 5.04 km/h.
Example 3 (falling). Ignoring air resistance, an object dropped from rest reaches about 9.81 m/s after one second, which is 9.81 × 3.6 = 35.316 km/h. After three seconds it is moving at 29.43 m/s, or 105.948 km/h.
A mental-math shortcut
Multiplying by 3.6 is the same as multiplying by 4 and then taking away a tenth of that product. For 25 m/s: 25 × 4 = 100, minus 10 leaves 90 km/h. For 15 m/s: 60 minus 6 gives 54 km/h. The trick is exact, not an approximation, because 4 − 0.4 = 3.6.

Mistakes to avoid
- Using the factor on the wrong side. Going from m/s to km/h the number grows, so you multiply by 3.6. If your answer is smaller than the input, the operation was inverted.
- Confusing m/s with ms. Written without the slash, "ms" normally means milliseconds.
- Expecting a mile-based result. If you need miles per hour instead, use the m/s to mph converter, or the speed converter for knots and feet per second as well.
Frequently asked questions
How many km/h is 1 m/s?
Exactly 3.6 km/h.
How do I convert km/h to m/s?
Divide by 3.6. For example, 90 km/h ÷ 3.6 = 25 m/s.
Is 3.6 an exact factor or a rounded one?
It is exact. 1 km = 1,000 m and 1 h = 3,600 s, and 3,600 ÷ 1,000 = 3.6 with nothing left over.
How fast is 100 m/s in km/h?
100 × 3.6 = 360 km/h. Going the other way, 360 km/h ÷ 3.6 = 100 m/s.
