How many meters per second are in one mile per hour?
One mile per hour equals 0.44704 meters per second, and the figure is exact. It comes straight from two definitions: the international mile is 1,609.344 m (5,280 feet of 0.3048 m each), and an hour is 3,600 seconds.
1 mph = 1,609.344 m ÷ 3,600 s = 0.44704 m/sMultiply any speed in mph by 0.44704 to get m/s.
The reverse direction is not so tidy. One meter per second is 3,600 ÷ 1,609.344 = 2.2369362920… mph, a decimal that never ends, so every mph answer is rounded. The m/s to mph converter takes care of that side.
Miles per hour versus meters per second
Miles per hour is the everyday road unit in the United States and the United Kingdom. Speed limits, car speedometers, wind forecasts, pitched baseballs and tennis serves are all quoted that way. It joins two non-SI units, the mile and the hour, which makes it clumsy inside a formula.
Meters per second is the coherent SI unit of speed, a length in meters divided by a time in seconds. Physics and engineering formulas assume it: kinetic energy ½mv², momentum mv and drag force give joules, kilogram-meters per second and newtons only when v is in m/s. That is why a speed read from a road sign or a spec sheet in mph usually has to be converted before it can be used in a calculation.
How to convert mph to m/s
- Type the speed in miles per hour into the top box.
- The lower box shows the speed in meters per second as you type; the button does the same job if you prefer to click.
- Read the result. It is rounded to at most six decimals and trailing zeros are dropped.
m/s = mph × 0.44704
Example 1 (a highway). A car holding 65 mph covers 65 × 0.44704 = 29.0576 m/s, close to 29 meters every second.
Example 2 (a walk). A brisk walking pace of 3 mph is 3 × 0.44704 = 1.34112 m/s.
Example 3 (energy). To find the kinetic energy of a 1,500 kg car at 65 mph, convert first: v = 29.0576 m/s. Then ½ × 1,500 × 29.0576² ≈ 633,258 J, or about 633 kJ. Feeding 65 straight into the formula would give a number that means nothing.
Quick estimates without a calculator
For a rough figure, multiply the mph value by 0.45. It runs about 0.7% high: 65 mph × 0.45 = 29.25 m/s against the exact 29.0576. A useful anchor to remember is that 22.4 mph is almost exactly 10 m/s.

Common mistakes
- Dividing by 3.6. That factor converts kilometers per hour to meters per second. For miles per hour the divisor is 2.236936, or the multiplier is 0.44704. Kilometers per hour have their own page, the km/h to m/s converter.
- Rounding the mile. Using 1,609 m instead of 1,609.344 m changes the answer by about 0.02%, which is harmless for a drive but noticeable in lab work.
- Mixing up miles. Knots are built on the nautical mile of 1,852 m, not the 1,609.344 m statute mile, so mph and knots are different scales. The speed converter handles both.
- Reading mps as miles per second. In this converter m/s always means meters per second.
Other speed pages that pair well with this one: mph to km/h, mph to ft/s and the speed, distance and time calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How many meters per second is 1 mph?
Exactly 0.44704 m/s. Ten miles per hour is therefore 4.4704 m/s.
How do I convert mph to m/s by hand?
Multiply the speed in mph by 0.44704. For instance, 40 mph × 0.44704 = 17.8816 m/s.
Why does the answer stop at six decimal places?
Six decimals of a meter per second is a micrometer per second, far finer than any speedometer or radar gun can read. Values below about 0.0000005 m/s show as 0.
Is converting mph to m/s the same as converting to km/h and dividing by 3.6?
Yes. One mph is 1.609344 km/h, and 1.609344 ÷ 3.6 = 0.44704, so both routes land on the same number.
