How many mph are in one km/h?
One kilometer per hour equals 0.621371 miles per hour. The relationship rests on the length of the mile: the international mile is defined as exactly 1,609.344 meters, so it takes 1.609344 kilometers to make a mile.
mph = km/h ÷ 1.609344The same thing as km/h × 0.621371.
Since an hour is the same length in both systems, only the distance unit changes, and the speed scales by the same ratio as the distances.
Kilometers per hour and miles per hour in practice
Almost every country measures road speed in km/h: it appears on European, Asian, African and Australian signs and on most speedometers. The mph scale is used on roads in the United States, the United Kingdom and a handful of smaller territories, and it is also the usual unit in American sport commentary.
The mismatch causes real confusion for travelers. A rental car in the United States has a speedometer in mph, while a driver arriving in Europe from the UK or the US sees limits posted in km/h. Converting before you set off avoids both fines and nasty surprises on the motorway.
How to convert km/h to mph
- Type the speed in km/h into the first box.
- The converter fills in the speed in mph while you type.
- To check by hand, divide by 1.609344 or multiply by 0.621371.
Example 1. A 50 km/h urban limit: 50 ÷ 1.609344 ≈ 31.07 mph.
Example 2. A 100 km/h rural road: 100 ÷ 1.609344 ≈ 62.14 mph.
Example 3. A 130 km/h motorway limit: 130 ÷ 1.609344 ≈ 80.78 mph.

Quick mental conversion
A close shortcut is to multiply the km/h figure by 5 and divide by 8. The ratio 5/8 is 0.625, only about 0.6% higher than the true 0.6214, so 100 km/h comes out as 62.5 mph and 130 km/h as 81.25 mph. Multiplying by 0.6 is quicker but undershoots by about 3.5%.
For the opposite direction use the mph to km/h converter. To express the speed in SI units, try the km/h to m/s converter, and for a distance rather than a speed the kilometers to miles converter does the same job. The speed calculator combines distance and time.
