Enter a speed in miles per hour and the converter returns feet per second, rounded to six decimals. A useful anchor: 60 mph is exactly 88 feet every second.

How many feet per second are in one mph?

One mile per hour is 1.466667 feet per second, which is exactly 22/15 ft/s. It follows from two definitions: a mile has 5,280 feet and an hour has 3,600 seconds.

ft/s = mph × 5,280 ÷ 3,600 = mph × 22 ÷ 15Reduced by their common factor 240, 5,280/3,600 becomes 22/15.

In words, multiplying by 5,280 expresses the distance covered per hour in feet, and dividing by 3,600 spreads that distance over each second.

Why people switch to feet per second

Miles per hour is how drivers, pitchers and cyclists in the US and UK describe speed, but it hides how much ground is covered in a moment. Feet per second shows that directly. It is the natural unit for estimating braking and reaction distances, for ballistics tables, and for textbook physics problems written in customary units where acceleration is in ft/s².

A driver at 30 mph is moving at 44 ft/s. If it takes 1.5 seconds to notice a hazard and start braking, the car has already travelled 1.5 × 44 = 66 feet before the brakes do anything. At 60 mph the same delay costs 1.5 × 88 = 132 feet.

How to convert mph to ft/s

  1. Type the speed in miles per hour into the first box.
  2. Read the equivalent in feet per second from the second box.
  3. By hand, multiply by 22 and divide by 15, or multiply by 1.466667.

Example 1. A 70 mph highway speed: 70 × 22 ÷ 15 ≈ 102.67 ft/s.

Example 2. A fastball clocked at 95 mph: 95 × 22 ÷ 15 ≈ 139.33 ft/s. Over the roughly 55 feet from release point to plate, a ball at that speed takes only about 0.4 seconds.

Example 3. A school-zone limit of 25 mph: 25 × 22 ÷ 15 ≈ 36.67 ft/s.

Any multiple of 15 mph converts to a whole number of feet per second: 15 mph is 22 ft/s, 30 mph is 44, 45 mph is 66 and 60 mph is 88. For other values, take the speed, add half of it, then remove about 2% (since 1.5 is slightly above 1.4667).

To work backward, the feet per second to mph converter applies the inverse factor. For metric speeds see the mph to km/h converter and the mph to m/s converter, and the average speed calculator can supply the mph value from a journey's distance and time.
