How many square feet are in a square mile?
A square mile contains exactly 27,878,400 square feet. A mile is 5,280 feet, and a square mile is 5,280 feet by 5,280 feet, so the area is 5,280 × 5,280 = 27,878,400 sq ft.

Avoiding the usual error
The most frequent slip is multiplying by 5,280, the number of feet in a mile. That converts a distance. Because the unit is squared, 5,280 has to be squared too. Using 5,280 on 2 square miles would give 10,560, which understates the true 55,756,800 by a factor of 5,280.
