How many square feet are in an acre?
One acre is exactly 43,560 square feet, which is the same as 4,840 square yards. The number has a farming origin: the traditional acre was a strip one furlong (660 feet) long and one chain (66 feet) wide, and 660 × 66 = 43,560. The shape is irrelevant today; any piece of land with that area is one acre.
square feet = acres × 43,560
Acres versus square feet
Both units measure area, but they live at different scales. Land for sale, farms and parks are quoted in acres, while houses, rooms and warehouses are quoted in square feet. Converting the land into square feet lets you compare it with a building footprint, for example when working out how much of a lot a new structure will cover.
A useful picture: a US football field between the goal lines (100 yd × 53⅓ yd) covers 48,000 square feet, a little over 1.1 acres. With both end zones added it is 57,600 square feet, about 1.32 acres. If an acre were a perfect square, each side would be about 208.7 feet.
How to convert acres to square feet
- Enter the number of acres in the first box. Decimals are fine.
- Read the area in square feet from the second box. It updates as you type.
- For a mental estimate, multiply by 40,000 and add about 9%.
Example 1: a 3.5-acre parcel has 3.5 × 43,560 = 152,460 square feet.
Example 2: a suburban lot listed at 0.23 acres has 0.23 × 43,560 = 10,018.8 square feet. If the house footprint is 2,000 square feet, the building covers roughly 20% of the lot.

Pitfalls when converting land area
- Linear feet are not square feet. A strip 66 feet wide and 660 feet long is 43,560 square feet; the two lengths added together say nothing about area.
- The survey acre is slightly different. The US survey acre is about 4 parts per million larger than the international acre used here, or roughly 0.17 square feet per acre. It only matters for very large tracts.
- Check the unit in a listing. Some sites quote lot size in square feet and others in acres. Convert both to one unit before comparing.
