Reading lot sizes correctly

• Lot versus building. A listing may give 2,400 square feet for the house and 0.31 acres for the lot. The two numbers measure different things and should not be compared directly.
• Do not drop zeros. 0.05 acres is 2,178 square feet; 0.5 acres is ten times larger at 21,780.
• Add parcels before converting. If you own two adjoining plots, sum the square feet first and convert once to avoid accumulating rounding errors.
